A rookie's thoughts on rockwood lump

Ok I do admit I am relatively new to this whole BGE thing, and I became addicted to this site after purchasing a medium BGE in Athens ( how bout them Dawgs!)Georgia last summer. After purusing this site, I immediately learned to keep my mouth  shut (sort of). except to ask good questions and  learn as much as I could from the experts here. Sometimes  the advice  and humor is caustic ( for you Florida State Univerity graduates ....that means abrasive) but it is always informative.  I became so enamored with this site and the whole BGE product line....  that late this summer I drove 3 hours to Atlanta ( I would rather get a root canal than drive to Atlanta) to purchase a slightly used BGE mini max for our home in Florida. I love it.

Primarily based  on reports from regulars here, in the  following months I, purchased a Rutland gasket as a backup ...and I am very impressed with the product and the customer service. Great product! I should have stopped reading this site there...
Next I read about kick ash baskets..... Again based on the reports here I bought one for the medium BGE. After 2 cooks with it I just had to have one in the mini max. I love them. I should have stopped reading this site there....

So, I keep reading about whole "rockwood" thing...... I have been really really  happy with my royal oak and BGE  lump....  But u guys keep brining up this rockwood thing.....give it a rest.

so today I drove 32 miles to ace hardware store in Sarasota Florida where I was told there might be a bag or 2 of rockwood...
So I purchased a bag.  I came home and tried it on the MM tonight, just FYI ... I had to endure an outdoor temperature of 62 degrees thanks to an arctic blast we are experiencing....
the steaks were amazing.
Tomorrow I am driving BACK to Sarasota ( 32 miles) to get another bag of  Rockwood....my neighbor is getting   A slightly used bag of royal oak lump. I am done with this site.

Rockwood is the best neutral lump there is, period.  Add the smoke wood on top of it as you please.

@tml1230 this site is so addictive. I never thought I would have a conversation with a liberal but this page brings us all togther. I’m even going to go hang with them at BB. Great bunch of guys and gals with cooking experience. Coolest thing about the egg is it has brought my family and I closer together because we cook daily on it. Good post by the way and RW is solid.

I assure you, the scope and depth of non-BGE related products that become "gotta have" based on recommendations from this site knows no bounds.
    Great post BTW-
Edit:  One mandatory (in my view and many others) item is a good instant read thermo.  These days there are a few manufacturers and options within their product lines.  Ask away and you will get many responses, then do your research and go from there.  FWIW-

DG Ace or Crowder Bros Ace??

My in-laws were in Sarasota for Thanksgiving and were trying to find some.  It's hard to tell which stores keep it in stock with all the special orders, but I thought those stores stocked it based off the sales.
  • I think your purchases have been reasonable products. You should feel good about that as there are many worse things you could throw money at. I have no experience with them, but have you looked at mangrates yet?

  • I resonate the OP's comments, I don't post here, but read a lot and appreciate the knowledge shared here.  Led to me ordering 10 bags of rock wood a couple months ago when I was running out of royal oak and the only locally stocked charcoals were BGE and cowboy.  Not even through the first bag, but can say the next time I run through St. Louis I will be seeing if I can pick up a pallet at a discount.  Have 3 guys I work with that are also eggers who will split it with me so I won't have to stock a whole pallet.

I hear they can now deliver Rockwood to your house. Haven't tried yet......still have a stash in the garage. When i purchased my first egg, they gave me the included bag of BGE lump. When all loaded up, guy says to me....follow me back in the store. He pulled a bag of Rockwood...and said for me to try and compare. It was all I needed....haven't burned a bag of anything else since them.

Now find yourself a premium meat source.....and you are all set. It's just money.

  • 1) People on this forum are notorious for not being sharers. Tone it down.

    2) Rockwood is the best solution I have found yet. Buy once, cry once. (Have it delivered to your door and spare the 3 hour ordeal!) I use the cheap stuff for low and slows but weekday hot cooks (most of what I do) I use Rockwood.

3). I spent a migrant summer with a college roommate between Punta Gorda and Sarasota while figuring out if bay fishing and UCF was a transition I wanted to make. (For the record, My likes include being a fisherman. Dislikes include blondes and the amount of hair care products a man has to own in order to call himself a UCF Knight.). Your state attracts some unique people.

I warned everyone the least expensive part of owning a BGE, is your initial purchase.
Great decision on the Rockwood. The best that you can buy.

Stlcharcoal,   Since there was only one bag left  on the shelf in the store, and i am on my way to grab it.... i hesitate to identify the exact location....

but in the spirit of brother and sisterhood .....its the DG Ace hardware in sarasota...
because of your mention of another potential vendor, i am also swinging by the Crowder Brothers Ace hardware. u never know....
i know, i shudda  bought both bags yesterday, nobody ever accused me of being the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree!
If firmly believe that if i could live a normal life without need a daily dose of really good humor and an occasional cooking tip, i would quit this site.

@Killit_and_Grillit you use Royal Oak for low and slow and Rockwood for hot and fast?   I thought it would be the opposite.

@tml1230 , with 68 posts, it doesn't sound like you have a ThermoWorks Smoke, or even a Thermopen.

@GoooDawgs One of the benefits of Rockwood is it's ability to light quickly without that putrid smoke you get off some of the cheaper stuff...which makes it great to light and stabilize when you're in a hurry.

I use Rockwood for good cuts of meat that I low and slow as well. But if I'm just tossing on a cheap pork butt or something and I have a bag of the lower quality stuff I'll throw it on. If I'm cooking for 8-10 hours I'm not exactly rushing to get to my ideal stable temp.
