OT Hotels in Las Vegas OT

SWMBO and I are going to Vegas in February. It's the first time for me. Where should we stay? She says it is up to me.

The Hotel, at Mandalay Bay or the Bellagio.  The Wynn looks nice but haven't stayed there.

The Hotel at Mandalay Bay or the Bellagio.  The strip is only a mile or 2.

Ballys was nice. More like a clean nice hotel rather than a resort room. Cheaper tho which was nice. Only sleeping in there. And it's right in the middle of the strip.

YOU MUST GO TO HASH HOUSE A GO GO!

its in Lync just north of the flamingo. Sage Fried Chicken Eggs Benedict. Thank me later. Also their Nitro Cold Brew Coffee with a shot of Jameson will get you started out right!

"buffet" is french.  Do you know how to ask for a bathroom?

I thought buffet was an acronym. Big Ugly Fat Fûckers Eating Together.
  • We always stay on the strip, but prefer to spend our money on better dining and/or an extra show than on more expensive lodging since we spend so little time in the room. Depends on your budget, but think about whether a pool is an important consideration for you. I also recommend getting a bus pass for the Deuce for getting up and down the strip.

I would recommend something in the middle of the strip. Maybe something near Bellagio. Last time we stayed at MGM Grand. We were very happy with the hotel but every day we walked the same route. Staying mid strip gives you the opportunity to go north or south each morning.
All the hotels are beautiful though, you can't go wrong no matter where you stay. Enjoy, we sure did!
  • We stayed at the Aria and really liked the experience. Introduced some Scots to Innis and Gunn at the bar there.

    Another vote for Aria.

  • Used to go to Vegas at least once a year for SHOT show, Heli-Expo, and/or the builders convention.  Stayed a lot of places, but quickly found I don't like staying in casinos.  Started staying at the Trump or TheHotel at Mandalay Bay.  Both are great, but at far ends of the strip.  The last two times I've had suite at Vdara.  No walking a mile through slot machines and smoke to find a few elevators .......valet your car and less than a minute later you're in your room.  Trump and Vdara were great with the kids.  Each has a fridge, small kitchen, multiple beds / crib options, etc.
  • I have been going to Vegas for the past 15 years.  1 to 2 times a year and have stayed about everywhere on the strip.  I have a few time shares in Vegas that we purchased when the market crashed in 2009 so have little invested in the Hilton Network.

With that said, I would recommend staying at the four corners Las Vegas in the Areas of Las Vegas Blvd and Flamingo Rd.   This is considered the "middle" of the strip.  You are close to all of the action.

You basically have Flamingo, The old wild bills casino now called the Cromwell, Ballys, Caesars Palace, and Bellagio

This puts you in walking distance to about everything.  With our timeshare, we have been staying at the Elara lately which is connected to Planet Hollywood.  Planet Hollywood is a wonderful spot with tons of great restaurants, shopping and casino all in one.

I think Mandalay Bay is beautiful, however, you are too far down the strip and will regret always having to walk into the middle of the action.

While we are at it, I will offer a few of my favourite things for you to think about adding to your list:

    • Ellis Island - the local special steak dinner is incredible and for under 10.00 you get a steak dinner, with a salad and draft beer.  Its an old school mini casino in behind Ballys.
    • Ellis Island Breakfast.  Best breakfast on the strip without a doubt!
    • Secret Pizza located at the cosmo on the third floor.  It is a hidden location with no advertising.  Get off the escalator and walk straight ahead down a dark hallway lol.  Once you get to the end you will be met with the best pizza in Las Vegas!
    • Gordon Ramsey burger makes an excellent burger at Planet Hollywood.
    • We love the Cheese Cake Factory at Caesars palace but last time we tried Carmines and it was lights out!  Some of the best Italian Food I have had in Vegas.
    • For shows, I think that O at the Bellagio is the top show.  We absolutely loved Absinthe at Caesars Palace this year.  It was such an amazing show that we will likely see it again.
    • If money is no object, SW steakhouse at the Wynn was very impressive.  Excellent quality steaks
    • Milos greek food lunch special.  App, entree, and dessert for the price of the current year.  Next year is will be 20.18 for the meal.
    • Bobby Flay Messa at Caesars Palace was good, but a little over priced for what you got.
    • If you want old school Vegas, the prime rib special at Market St. Restaurant at the California.  Four Queens also has an excellent prime rib.
anyways, just a few of our favourites over the years.  Everyone will have an opinion on where to go and what to do, but trust me when I say stick to the four corners and you will be very happy with your location

I will echo a few comments on here- I always try and stay in a smaller hotel so I don't walk a mile from entering the doors to my room.  There is no easy 'walking the strip'- they have it designed to make it difficult.

    I typically stay-
Westin off the strip- love the size, easy to go in the back door of Ballys for the monorail.
Tropicana- easy to get to the room floors with surprisingly nice rooms
Winn- one of the nice hotels rooms I ever had and can sometime get it in expensively

I have stayed in almost every big hotel and try avoid the scene in them- Since I am there for work I just want to relax at the end of the day.

Not quite in Austin, TX City Limits
Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting.  The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president.

Living in Vegas, I can't be of much help on what hotels to stay in. I would recommend staying near the center of the strip if you plan on spending all your time there. If you are looking to get off the strip, there are a ton of great hotels off strip that are really nice.
Best advice for your first time, stay on the strip and soak that experience in, but make sure you have access to a car and get out into the surrounding area. Red Rock, Hoover Damn/Boulder City, Mt. Charleston are all close and worth your time to visit.

  • The long tour at Hoover Dam was awesome......got to see the inner workings of the dam itself, not just the powerhouse.

The new gangster museum downtown is cool.  I always go to the car museum in the Imperial (or whatever it is called now.)  Also, gotta hit the Pinball Hall of Fame.  Haven't been there in a long time, but the "Secret Garden" at the Mirage was worth the money.

It's been a long time on the shows, but "O" and "Zumanti" were good.  Blue Man was kind of a waste of time.  Wife had never seen Phantom, so we did that--I seen it several times before, but still impressive since the theatre was made for it.  Cheap shows, Mac King's mid-day magic show and the funniest comedian I've ever seen, Vinny Favorito (both were at the Flamingo or Harrah's at the time).

Bellagio buffet is always impressive.  For cheap eats, Secret Pizza on the strip, or Capriotti's and In & Out Burger not too far off the strip.  Batista's Hole in the Wall behind the Flamingo is also a cool place--food is ok, but it's more of place to see a LOT of LV history......and hear Mr. Bastista play his accordion!

The Hotel is now The Delano. Got a south beach style makeover a couple of years ago. Pro tip- Looks a lot like The Hotel but different :)

  • Another vote for the Venetian. Nice, large rooms, and the service we experienced was top shelf. Plus, a ton of dining options at the adjacent food court. Also recommend the Mob Museum downtown. It sounds kitschy, but it's not. Really well done and interesting.

If you want a couple off the strip recommendations, I have enjoyed staying at the Hard Rock hotel and casino. I am not a gambler and normally stay at the Ressaunance near the convention center. It is a lodging / dinning hotel only. No bright lights, dinging,.....etc.

I thought the exhibit on St. Valentine's Day Massacre was a just some bricks.......NO, it's the actual wall.  They were numbered when the building in Chicago was torn down, then the wall was rebuilt at the museum!

Stayed at Mandalay Bay and Ballys.  Both were nice. Definitely hit up the Grand Canyon if you get a chance. It is breathtaking. Also if you're feeling extra outdoorsy, book a kayaking trip through Evolution Expeditions to take you to Emerald Cave. Beautiful area.

Oh, and make sure to not pickup any candy or other nic nacs that are for sale in your room. They sit on electronic trays and if you pick it up to look at it, the hotel will automatically know and charge you for it. We didn't know that and my wife picked up a bag of M&M's to see how much they were and the hotel charged us $11. LOL

I think that started as a Four Seasons about 20 years ago when the Mandalay opened. Haven't been back since, but the separate entrance, check in and elevators were great, but as people have said, not a great place to walk from.
  • stay at least one day downtown Freemont street, maybe at the Plaza, it's a different experience than the usual strip, it's a fun freak show with 3 stages of live music and a 3 block long party
