Mounting an egg on a boat/yacht

Anybody taken their egg out on the ocean?  We're thinking of taking one on our 75' sailboat.. making a gimbel for it out on the back deck.   How do you think that would work?

Went deep sea fishing on a charter out of Orange Beach a few summers back... They had a MM mounted on the stern platform. The deckhand cleaned a red snapper as soon we reeled it in and Egged it - best seafood ever.

I don't recommend it, but if you're determined to do this, just make sure you use protection.

Sounds like you have the real estate to have an ocean going egg. Have you checked your insurance regarding such use? Much like many condos and apartments, charcoal fired grills and smokers or open fire places are not allowed under some boat insurance. Propane or butane stoves are fine, but naphtha, kerosene and "natural" wood fires were prohibited under the boat insurance we had.

been offshore in a 13 foot fiberglass canoe grilling, so why not =)  thinking size might matter with a 75 foot boat, theres the crew, the family, the guests to feed ;)

Let's see, charcoal is bigger than air molecules and thus will not settle in the bilge like propane. Charcoal is visible, unlike propane and if you strike a match and put it on charcoal, a fire is not likely to result. If the burning charcoal somehow came out of the egg, and was thrown in the water (of which there is normally some around a boat) the fire goes out.
Charcoal is not explosive like either gasoline or propane. Many small boats have used wood for heat for years. Marinas don't like grills because they smoke and bother other boaters. I have a rail mount charcoal grill for my boat but don't have enough boat for an egg.
Only problem I see is the weight swinging in the gimbal. What do I know I only operate stink pots.

I've "mounted" a lot of things on a boat in my lifetime.  Never a Egg

It is my opinion you should do this and come back and tell the forum if you think it worked.

I saw a picture of a BGE in a gimbal on a motoryacht (probably 100 foot LOA range) but have never been able to find that pix again.

I've posted this pic here a couple of times:

Obviously not a gimbal but does appear that it will hold it fairly snugly.

Some folks just mount them as if they were in a table:

I'd want to have some bands made out of stainless steel. Maybe one day BGE will offer stainless steel bands as an option.

Unless you just hate the color red, Kamado Joe sells their two larger models in  a version that have all stainless steel hardware.

Are you talking as a holder for transport and no cooking? Or cooking as well? If cooking, there is not a chance I would do that (cook on an egg while under way. Just not worth the risk. Not to mention I am usually driving the boat and the cook. I couldnt pay close enough attention to each, and each deserves full attention in that circumstance.

Many of the charter boats here on the Florida/Bama gulf coast have eggs installed one way or the other...  a 75 ft boat, you got plenty of space fer an egg somewhere.  Just get ready fer rust.
