How Do You Like ROCKWOOD Lump

Tried it for the first time a couple of months ago and love it. One of the absolute best brands I've used.
Cincinnati, Ohio. Large BGE since 2011. Still learning.
  • I's my everyday lump. I use it for all low 'n slo cooks. Only time i sue anything else is when I use the CarBroil Center Cut lump for a really hot  and fast burn. And once my supply of Charbroil is gone I'll probably use Rockwood for all of my cooks.

My local Ace (3 miles away) carries it so I have yet to order off the Internet.

I usually split a pallet or half pallet with a fellow egghead. Which reminds me I'm getting close to needing to order more. Down to 100# which is No Bueno

I still like to try other varieties when the opportunity arises, but all that does is reinforce how much more I prefer Rockwood to what else is available.

I spend half of the year in FL in a Motor Home with little storage room and no one that sells it in Okeechobee FL the rest of the year I'm in NC and I do have a little storage space but again no close by supplier. I have managed to get about 4 bags from Egger friends and used it last Saturday at the NC Butt Blast and it's without a doubt a very good lump and I would pay a little extra to get it. But ordering online wont work for me and my circumstances. So if you have a supplier close or have the storage space to order the amount needed to get free shipping then get some and I don't think you will be disappointed.

All that being said if you get a bag that is a lot of small pieces it's most likely due to the shipping process and not the brand of lump. All lump will burn big or tiny and in the end regardless of brand it's all ash in the end! Good luck in your lump adventures, Jim

  • I love it, but agree it is cheaper to order and have delivered over purchasing at my local Ace

Not if you use the ace coupons they send out regularly. It's been a long time since I've paid full price for a bag.

Love it! It is the only lump I use. I want to try Fogo, but I haven't wanted to spend more money per bag when I love what I use.

@B747crew Given the reputation that Rockwood has on this forum I am curious as to the trigger that prompted the question especially when not a Friday.

    Rockwood for me.

Every time I use another brand, the best I can hope for is that it's almost as good.  As fuel efficient as the eggs are, why bother with anything else.

@Jupiter Jim would you and Kay be interested in coming down to UTA Sports in May? @UTAsports Stephen sells it now and that's where I get mine. Planning on doing a cook over there with @piney for him.

I like it. It makes the biggest difference (for the good) when cooking veggies in my opinion. RO is fine for all other cooks

I love Rockwood. Since Ace carries it and I am actually only quarter mile from Ace it is also the closest lump. That makes it a win win.

I've always used cowboy lump. Heard a lot of good reviews of rockwood. Tried it and I won't go back. I also ordered a bag of fogo. Yet to try it. Not sure if it's any good?  I ordered my rockwood from firecraft

There is an ACE hardware in Okeechobee.  They should be able to order a bag for you.  SKU 8400772

I know but the last time I ordered at an ACE here in NC the cost was $30.00 just too much for me.

That was just a dealer ripping you off. That's not the norm.

Funny story.  A couple years ago my local dealer only carried BGE brand. I told him that if he'd start carrying OO and rock wood I'd gladly buy from him, and that I'd been getting both from firecraft. So the dumb sob ordered a bunch from firecraft, marked them up 5 and 9 dollars a bag (respectively) and called me, asking how many I wanted!!!

@Jeremiah  - For real??  Shoulda offered to take in the RW and split the profit for delivering and reordering to keep him in stock.  Dang-the regular consumer must present quite an attractive target in the retail Q industry these days.  But if you can get it...

  • I have two aces locally that sell it, one that st Louis charcoal sells to and knows the owners the other he wasn't familiar with. The one he isnt familiar with charges 8 dollars more a bag than the other one. I bet they are doing the same @Jeremiah.

It pops quite a bit when I light it with the Mapp torch.  An ember jumped up and added a "thumb hole" in my sweet polyester Callaway sweatshirt.  Melted instantly!

But, it stays lit, cooks evenly and imparts a good flavor.  I buy it 100lbs at a time.  I love it.

But for reals, I wear safety goggles and long sleeves when I'm lighting it.
