Okay my cousin, an Atlanta engineer, looked at it. There is damage to the columns so we can double my original estimate on time. Also they used steel girders but his company is already manufacturing all of the fasteners, that will still increase the time a bit. The good news is that GDOT is taking it seriously. They have already hired the original contractor and are purchasing materials.

3 sections north and 3 sections south will have to be replaced - "several months".  And all this on a section of interstate that is used by 225,000 vehicles per day.   :|
I will bet that covers the planning and engineering phase. My guess is open by Thanksgiving and quadruple the normal cost.
Well......they just announced that the bridge will be open for traffic Monday morning.  The contractor (CW Matthews) will get over 3 million in bonuses for completing the project so early.  This means I get to go back to leaving the house at 7:15 again instead of 5:50.  Oh happy days!!

@GATraveller I agree that is pretty impressive they were able to get it done. I was driving home from Atlanta last night at about 11:30 PM. North of Atlanta where 75 and 85 spit 85 N was a parking lot. Luckily for me I was taking 75. As I passed under 85 I couldn't believe how bad it was at that time. I'm thinking there must have been an accident that caused it to back up more than usual.

@SmokeyPitt there's ALWAYS an accident somewhere around here.  We definitely have more than our share of inept drivers.

I've sat in traffic for two hours after midnight before. There's a lot of road construction at night around here.

That's good news for everyone impacted by that event!

Didn't someone say earlier in this thread that the bridge wouldn't be re-opened until about Thanksgiving? :)

I think that was more due to them starting the re-restriping of the exit onto the Buford-Spring Connector back to a single exit lane.

That is probably because they work at night to avoid the traffic rush. In Miss. work on I 10 that requires a lane closure is only done at night Sunday through Thursday. We can't do anything about idiots who have wrecks at other times.

It takes longer for Illinois contractors to chip seal a mile of road than these Atlanta contractors to build an entire bridge!
