You know he exceeded all expectations when David Axelrod gives him a positive comment on the speech presentation.  All words and promises-too bad the goose has run out of golden eggs to fund the up-charge.

I'm old enough to remember when concern about the debt and deficits were all the rage but that was before the Republicans were totally in charge of the candy store.

It appears as though the only kind of govt spending our local libs don't like is defense. Happens to be the single most legitimate spending which the federal govt can partake. Hmmm?

How much should the US spend on defense each year?

i would like to see it go up a couple percent compared to the gnp with a heavy push on research and developement. jobs, new advanced markets, be nice to lead a new market. i liked the star war type programs,  the chip technologies, the gps positioning stuff that was going on right before obama that brought the drones etc. , probably had alot to do with the self driving cars. whats new coming out of defense developement right now, absolutely nothing =)=)

I think we need at least quadruple the budget of the next ten countries combined if we really want to feel safe.  But that's just me.

There really weren't massive cuts in Defense R&D spending under Obama compared to Bush.  I write that as someone whose actual work is paid for by the DOD.

its not getting off the drawing board then, the faucets shut off on my side in fabrication and machining an actual product. most of the smaller shops are now closed that used to do this type of work.  get off the net, get that work done and off your desk, we need some work =)

Why would we machine anything when we can 3D print it?  You're just a few decades behind in manufacturing tech there bud =)

We already spend right at a trillion dollars a year for everything defense related so give me a number. Exactly what money should the US budget to be "safe"?

Trumpty Dumpty wants to create a 350 ship navy. Remember back in St. Reagan's day that the goal was a 600 ship navy. Why stop at 350?

I'm sure there are quite a few defense related research projects that you and me aren't really privy to.

Great question. You answer. Then answer for all the other categories of the budget while you're at it. Just a brilliant poignant question right there. You must know.

The problem with defence spending is that it's insurance, not actual productive capacity, and you don't know how much of it you need and when you will need it.

Defense and infrastructure are two of the very few legitimate federal obligations.

Well one way to guarantee we'll need more insurance of this sort is to cut the budget for the State Department.  Thankfully cooler heads in Congress will likely prevail on that score.

Or turn your back and allow your self described mortal enemies to repopulate. That works too. Don't call them by name or they will hate you even more than they hate you now. Hate x Hate x Hate x Hate. That's really a lot of hate. Just close that prison, yeah, that'll do it. Doh!

I have no idea what the "magic" number is that would make us "safe". I would spend less. Actually, I would stick with the "sequestration" that Congress put in place a few years ago with one exception - icebreakers. We're woefully behind in number of icebreakers. Really do need to close that icebreaker gap!

Most Republicans want to spend more. Always more. I've not met many, when asked how much we should spend on defense related items, don't just simply say "More".

If a trillion dollars isn't enough I'm just curious what is the magic number?

The US Constitution provides for federal spending on infrastructure? That's a pretty liberal interpretation of that document. Good on ya! :)

Agreed. I would be willing to revert back to the states if you wish. No problem.

Kinda like liberals only they spend on failure. Education is bad, spend more. It gets worse, spend more etc.
