Covector cracked?!

Hoping someone can give me some insight. Did some pizzas on my XL last night. Went to clean up and put my pizza stone away and found one of the legs of the convector crack off? Any ideas. Just bought the BGE and convector about six weeks ago. And have used it probably for 12 plus cooks with only one cook without the convector in. Thanks for any help.

With it being only 6 weeks old, take it back to your dealer for replacement.

  • I just texted him. And I'm hoping it won't be an issue. Sent him same pics and he said he's sending them to his rep.

How long have you had the egg?  The convector or plate setter is covered for 3 years.  I am on my third one.  Call your dealer and file a claim. You can try to use some high heat JB's Weld one it till you get your new one from the dealer.

When my plate setter eventually breaks I'll be getting something from the ceramic grill store if not before

JB weld works beautifully. I put mine back together and got a new one on warranty and thus, have a backup.

Mine has been jb welded together over a year- but I was responsible for it cracking.

  • Thanks for all the info. And yes, my table is the BGE Mahogany table. Love them both.

Cool. Didn't know they made one that color. Beautiful wood.

Jbweld can release fumes at moderate temps.  If I need to repair ceramic I would use Rutland furnace cement.
  • Thanks. And now I want to sell this since I'll have no use for it.

  • Dude don't do it! I'd love a stick burner one day. No way I've got the room for it now though.

  • Oh I get it. But.... I've had it for six years and cooked A LOT on on it. But it's a J.O.B. To cook on. The BGE is a dream come true!

@Cutconcrete1 -  I have gone in the reverse direction.  So, don't discard just yet.  As you are aware, every rig that runs on a different fuel source produces a different flavor profile.  I can understand the level of effort for the stick burner but options in the Q world are a part of the experience. And you have a great rig right there.  Just look at your BGE as an addition, not a replacement.
On a related but different note-I trust you have air-gapped your BGE above your table.  Too many (>0) fires from the wood below the BGE (even on a paver) failing over time.  All above FWIW-
BTW-Welcome aboard and above all, have fun and don't run out of adult supervisory beverages.  (And I do find a stick burner does easily lend itself to a more frequent beverage consumption cycle.  ;)  )

Same here - tossed mine a little too hard one time and it cracked a leg. A little JB Weld and it's held together for years since

Warranty coverage and platesetter replacement should not be a problem,  but keep the old one and break it up into pieces amd use for raising grid for pizza.   Get a cgs spider and stome with adj rig multi grid setup amd you will be golden....

As others have said. JB Weld works depending on the stress level of the break location.
Both of mine broke in similar spot and were not fixable. Cut the other 2 legs of and sand it smooth. They do make good pizza stones after they are cut down.

  • Cutconcrete1   Mine cracked in the exact location as yours about 3 weeks ago and I repaired it with JB Weld.  It's pretty solid but I don't trust it so last weekend I did a 10lb shoulder I put the stock egg grate on the fire ring and then the repaired plate setter on top of that.  Just a safety measure I guess.

BTW FWIW I did a 3 hour 300 degree burn in the oven to test it out and give it a good cure.  Not sure that makes a difference but I did it anyways.

    Love your table too!

  • So I went to the dealer and he took my broken place setter and gave me a new one. But....  he says, "I think they will warranty it. But if they don't I'll just charge you my cost on this one". It's great I got a replacement the next day. But either way I'm not paying for the new one. I have spent a TON of money in his store on the egg, table, accessories, two Yeti coolers, Yeti cups, and hardware as it's a hardware store. He's gonna step up and I'm going to ask for the old one back!

It's luck of the draw. They are ceramic and fragile. You never know if there was a defect from the pour, has it been dropped during packaging and shipping. Or even mishandled by customers in the store be their employees or customers.
By the time you actually get the plate setter, it has been packaged, shipped, and placed in inventory. It has went through many hands. It's no telling how many times that it has already been dropped, beat around, and mishandled. My first one lasted about a week. My second sister be has lasted almost 3 years. Again, luck of the draw.

I am on my second. My first split right down the middle, broke in half. Took it to my dealer, got a brand new one, NQA. After this one, I am doing the CGS. I have been wanting to anyway. Need to spend some cash, it has been two weeks since I have bought anything for egg related activity.
