Sticky Blackstone

Just set up my 36" Blackstone. Griddle feels very sticky on the bottom edges (like around the pegs) and shows what looks like grease in the back corner on the cooktop area. About to clean it up to see if it comes off. Anyone else seen anything like this? Box was factory strapped and sealed so it wasn't a return.

There is also a small nick in the grease channel, but I don't think that's worth returning it for unless I see that it impedes the flow to the drain.

  • It's nothing more than the product they use to protect against rust during shipping. Scrub the whole thing well with soap and water before firing it up. That nick won't cause any issues

  • @HofstraJet I received a blackstone for Christmas last year and have yet to use it. It has the same grease/coating on it you speak of and it has prevented any rust from forming over the past year. Once you clean it well and season it you will be good to go.

Basically the coating is so you don't open the box to a rusted top. I would not remove any of it other than the cooking surface.

Looking forward to seeing your cooks on it.

I took a palm sander to mine before seasoning. I went with 60 grit and then 120 grit paper.

Soap and water didn't get the sticky stuff out of the corner, but I used a few wet wipes and it came off. Seasoning it now. Using flaxseed oil (aware of the flaking issues). Here it is after the first round. Onions and oil for the next round and then bacon for round three.

Mine had the grease stuff too.  I fired it up let it burn off then hit it with water.  The steam cleaned it all up.

Here is mine after 1 year of use.

The nick in the grease channel you will find annoying when cleaning, especially with paper towel.  You'll end up filing it down.  Love the Blackstone.  Enjoy.

The entire grease setup on the BS suck.  Total after thought.

Agree completely.  And it still needs @blasting's JB weld mod for the grease trap.

  • Definitely recommend the JB grease drip mod

Which brand of flaxseed oil are you using?

  • so much fun. Just busted out fajitas for 10 in 30 minutes (including making fresh tortillas)

    1) I wouldn't worry too much about the oil you use to season. I used Crisco veggie oil to season and laid down a perfect finish. I followed @Thatgrimguy
suggestions otherwise but didn't do bacon after the onions. It's like a black mirror and totally nonstick.

    2) can someone point me to the JB weld fix? My drip rail and cup are working perfectly but I can tell there may be trouble on the horizon

We are doing Waffle House short order cook for New Year's Eve breakfast tomorrow. Eggs (any style you want), pancakes, home cured bacon, hashbrowns (covered and smothered? Sure).

Here's the JB Weld fix. http://eggheadforum.com/discussion/1189012/blackstone-simple-grease-trap-fix-accessories

Though my Blackstone (mfg. 6/16) seems to have the nub right at the hole so maybe I won't need the fix. Will try bacon tomorrow and see what happens. Did the onions tonight.

That sticky stuff is likely cosmoline. It's pretty common especially on goods shipped in from overseas.

Also take a few flat washers and shim the top to get it to drain like you want it. Patios are sloped and decks aren't perfectly level so shimming will account for this. You can test it with water to see how the grease will drain.
