The top one is a nakiri bocho, which is a traditional home knife for chopping vegetables. The bottom one is not Japanese in regards to traditional shapes, but most closely resembles a Deba bocho, which is a slicing knife used for meats and fish. In this case, since Shun is geared towards the US market, it's likely just a modified knife for rock-chopping/mincing, like a mezzaluna. Shun does this with many of their knives, with just the look and edge angles matching traditional Japanese knives. Rounded edge profiles are relatively rare in Japan due to differences in cutting styles compared to Western knives.gmac said:
@DoubleEgger. Not knowing anything about Japanese knives, can you tell me more about what they are and why such a big belly?DoubleEgger said:

If you do, no need to 'splain. If you don't, you prob'ly wouldn't care.

Based on the leather in the background and the hand holding the tool, I would guess a hand leather tool.

Do you buy them "with ass" and then use this tool to remove the offending item or do you make them that way from scratch with this?Eggcelsior said:

On sweet little niece asked me three times yesterday if I really liked/wanted the pizza peel! I said oh yeah! I'm so glad you got it for me! Her and my other two nieces are coming over tomorrow night to spend the night with my wife and I, I told her I would make them some pizza with it, and if they didn't be have, I would use it to paddle them. She sounded excited about the pizza

my follow up pic is from July, where i used one that was a little thicker. Practicing hand tooling. This one is longer, and a thinner line.
