Need help removing dark stains from BGE dome

How does one remove dark stains from the dome? I've tried Citrus degreaser, Purple Power degreaser and Simply Green with no luck.

Not sure it will work but maybe take a mapp torch to it to burn off grease first?

  • I used TSP (TriSodium Phosphate) when my egg and table caught on fire. Cleaned it like it was new

I've always used oven cleaner. Works like a charm

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I've always been leery of using harsh chemicals on the BGE surface. I'll give oven cleaner a try.

    This ^^^

TSP is food safe, one of the major ingredients in no-rinse brewery cleaners.  Also you can try some oxyclean stuff for the laundry.  And a scrubby.  If none of that works, a hammer.

Oven cleaner will work, it's just extremely caustic

    Rainwater works for me.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I'll be putting it in a new table soon and I just felt like trying to get it cleaned up. I typically try to keep my stuff fairly clean like vehicles, tools yard etc.

This summer I had removed my SmokeWare cap to clean it and left it off for a couple months. Rather than to dig out my daisy I used the old stand by trick eggers used to do of merely sitting my ceramic cap on ****-eyed to cut the outward air flow. Well, in doing so the exterior of my dome got very black where the ceramic cap had rested. When I decided to revert to my SmokeWare I started to clean off the baked on black. I used many different cleaning agents and lots of elbow grease. I also used Easy Off. While all of this effort cleaned the high parts of the texture the pitted parts are still solid black! Yes - I tried stiff brushes and still no luck. So I can understand what the OP is facing though I believe mine is worst since mine seems to be baked onto the glazed pits.

Yep Ron, that's what I'm trying to get cleaned up. Same thing happened to me with the Daisy Wheel cap on that allowed black grease to drip all down the dome. I'll try the TSP tomorrow and see how that works. If that doesn't work I'll try Easy Off!

By the way, I got the base and cap Rutland gaskets you sent installed today. Thanks!

Pizza cooks do that for me but if I'm cooking a steak after doing ribs or something, I'll brush the old BBQ sauce off the grate before putting the steaks on it. That's just me though...

  • I just cleaned my BGE ready for the Xmas turkey. I have been 'ordered' to have no additional smokey flavours so I did a deep burn off clean. I had a similar issue with dark smoke marks on the lid area which would not come off without hard rubbing.

I found that rubbing ash on the lid removed the remaining stains as it is slightly abrasive. Hope this helps.

First post and happy xmas everyone.

Just to keep this thread alive here is my large even after much-o chemicals and elbow grease. I think the blackness is a permanent trait.

Yep, that's almost what mine looks like except I have some stains that are more toward the base too. The TSP didn't really seem to help mine. If you already tried Easy Off on yours then I see no reason to. Thanks

I do use the ceramic cap to snuff the fire out. I believe my black stains came from cooking with the daisy wheel cap that has grease built up in it.

I just received a Smokeware cap for an early Christmas present so I'll be running with it full-time. Hopefully it snuffs the fire as well as the ceramic top but I have my doubts.

@EggHead_Bubba I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised.  I have the original on my Large and It works great.  I also have the "new" style (different slots) on my Minimax and no issues there either.

Best of luck and happy holidays!
