We keep seeing and hearing the news about Louisiana's flooding but we can't imagine the full scope of it.

Our own Nephew # 2 had to evacuate from his house in the Sherwood Forest area of Baton Rouge.  He moved to a condo in New Orleans for now.  A lot of new furniture lost along with the usual stuff but it may be fixable if it can be cleaned out before the mold takes over.

He didn't say anything about his Big Green Egg but I'm fairly certain it survived to cook another day.

Having lived in Louisiana much of my life I'm very familiar with flooding.  But the floods back in the late 1800's and up to the late 1900's were just as big.

The ones I remember vividly start in 1945 right after the war.  Army Duck's were used to move people from their rooftops to higher ground, and then to Army tents set up any place available.  There wasn't really much anyone could do other than wait it out.

In 1953 I had to help round up cattle that were spread out over a very large 'open range' area in deep woods.  Once we drove them to high ground, we still had to load them onto my dad's truck for transport through deep water to the hill country and turn them loose until it was over.

Oddly, no one panicked or thought the world was coming to an end. It was the only life many people there knew.  If they still had their milk cow, chickens and mule, they could make it.  Any sorrow was offset by patience and determination to get back to their lives.

Only nowadays, there are a great many more people, the natural drainage has been altered many times, and although the government and other agencies are quick to offer help, they can't possibly bear the burden of pain and sorrow of someone's total loss of everything they own.

    Sad.

Wasn't aware of OBR, but the financial disclosures on the web site show a very, very favorable (low) expense ratio.  Happy to support the efforts to feed those affected by the flooding.

Truth is an ice weasel that burrows not in your frozen septic tank but in the cubes of your soul.
