Lump Trivia ... The Beginning

You know what.....all those tests were done on the fines, not the lump. I have no idea how they test them, but it's a certified lab that did it on 4 tests.chadpsualum said:@stlcharcoal ...if you assume that particle size varies from bag to bag is your figure of 16#/ft3 based on an average of a couple of trials? When this check is made, do you shake/vibrate to pack as tightly as possible so you have a true compact bulk density (CBD)? I ask because I work in the petrochemical industry, specifically with catalysts and we do similar measurements.
So, scratch that number I gave you before, it's going to be lower. A pallet takes up 53.33 ft3 for 600# which is about 11 #/ft3, but that includes all the paper & everything. The bags around about 1.5 ft3 inside, so that's about 13 #/ft3. I suppose it's somewhere between 12-14 on average??

I wanted the entire egg on a scale. It would make burn rate calculations a lot easier.
@Jeepster47 didn't want to invest in the proper equipement. Maybe we should start a gofundme or a kickstarter?I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

rumor has it that in just 6 more years @Jeepster47 will have finally paid off his son's college loans so maybe he can buy proper equipment then!Ozzie_Isaac said:

The humidity of the basement Is not a constant. The only way to ensure the same measurement is to soak the charcoal first. This way, it starts out as 100% humidity. You will also get the volume by measuring the water displaced as you take out the wet charcoal.
once dried, you can load it in the egg and continue with your test. With the burnt charcoal, I recommend soaking and washing off the ashes and weighing the unused lumps at 100% humidity.Large BGE, Small BGE, KJ Jr, and a Cracked Vision Kub.

Are you using six-sigma or ISO-9001 guidelines for your test criteria?
