Critical thinking at its very best.

Many years ago I read a book called "Propaganda: The Formation of Men's Attitudes" by a fellow named Jaques Ellul. Written around 1962, translated into English around '73. I read it maybe '83. There were several things that stuck w. me.

Primarily, modern propaganda is based on the use of psychology to subvert the capability for rational thought. This is done by manipulating symbols that elicit feelings strong enough that activities are set in motion which would not have happened if the propagandized had spent time to think things thru.

Secondarily, propaganda is deeply addictive. Populations which have been sufficiently propagandized will become distressed, depressed, agitated, alienated, if they stop receiving a regular presentation. In the long run, the effect is that the population becomes hostile to any rational thought. (I.E. "Don't try to confuse me with facts.") , and probably incapable of it.

He proposed a useful exercise. Noting that the best propaganda has little if any use for clear information, take news articles, etc and cross out all characterization and typification, and deprecate any factual modifiers. Reduce the narrative to its bare bones, if you will. The bonier the presentation, the greater the likelihood that there is something that will allow a useful appraisal.

I binge-watched Christopher Hitchens for about a week recently.   Nothing earth shattering for me, as i figured out most of his points on my own when I was a teenager.

Wish I could start a thread about that argument that wouldn't sink, and that had someone, anyone, that wanted to actually debate it.

It's hard to open a mind to see his debates on the existence of god as logically superior if one's mind was molded by years of magical training.  We all have points of view, nothing wrong with that.

That's why I find him so interesting.  I don't find fault in or point fingers at those who don't believe - not in my control.
I am a believer but I do try and keep an open mind as well as question and study why I believe what I believe....instead of just saying I do based on "faith".  Blind faith is dangerous at best.
