Quitter, anyone that leaves mid season is a quitter. Tough day for all USC coaches, one is fired and one "retires".

Never a good time to leave.  You are either labeled a quitter or lier to your recruits.  At least he led us to the pinnacle and our arch rival never beat us when we were worth a crap.

I think we'll hear more to this story. I find it pretty odd that he would up and leave in the middle of the season.

Hate to see him end his career like this. I never thought he would quit.

He's either not well or has knocked up a young lady he shouldn't have. Spurrier didn't even quit the Redskins midseason. It's not like we are talking about the Louisville head coach....

Maybe he heard the QB slot opened up at Florida and thought he would give it another try.

Sick of losing.  He's a quitter.

  • My $$ is on illness. Cancer that will require immediate surgery and treatment.

quitting for being tired of losing doesn't make sense to me. I've been on the field against him and on the golf course with him. He's a competitor thru and thru.

I'll place my money on him being sick or family sickness.  I don't see him quitting just because.  I've always admired him as a player and coach.

Not a quitter, but doing USC a great favor by retiring mid season so we can get the right head coach before other teams start looking. Solid, selfless move.

Good luck convincing the kids he recruited to come play for him that this is for their benefit.

You know, IF, a big if, he or family member is sick and he's having to focus time and effort towards that, that is just the way life is.  If a recruit, current player, or parent cannot accept that then they have issues.  Not everyone gets the trophy little Jimmie.

Now, if it isn't because of that, then that is another conversation.

  • And that, @pridenjoy, makes perfect sense.  I want to see more of the story.

I remember being Floridas homecoming whipping boys one year. I made it a point to be one of the guys at midfield when the head coaches came together to shake hands. He had only great things to say to our coach and shook hands and spoke to everyone who asked for a handshake.

I grew up a UGA kid, and I find it hard to say good things about him, but is a great coach.

    But he cheats in golf!

Ha! Very funny! Petrino is a changed man, he caddied for his daughter, but he still brings in women beating felons for his football team. Louisville is such a bad place these days.

IF it was for an illness issue I could understand and so should others.
For players, there is a very small window that these kids can actually play ball and very few will make it to the next level.  So to try and make them understand that throwing in the towel on this season is best for the organization long term is total BS.

I wonder about illness or something else.  They don't get more competitive than Spurrier.   He is truly one of the greatest coaches of all time.   He will be missed, especially at SEC Media days!

    What say ye?  @northGAcock
I think there is more to the story than we no right now. I think he has the luxury of waking up and saying I don't feel like doing this anymore....which is really quitting. I don't think he has the staff around him to pull this thing together. Stepping aside allows us to begin the search.....on what is an already shot season. I think we lack quality athletes at this point....and the only way to fix this is to recruit better......which is hard for them to do with his age. Will be interesting with a couple of his family members on staff.

I hope health is not the reason but too early to call right now until we hear from the OBC. One thing is for sure....we will hear from him and like always....will tell it like it is.

They're still going to be looked at regardless of who's at the helm.  It is a big time school and they'll get exposure.

I was listening to some Football show on ESPN last week and they had some speculation about him retiring, but I think they said at Season's end, so there had to be some info going around. Surprised by the timing, which leads to health speculation. Hope he is OK. One of the few College Coaches whose career I paid any attention to.

  • Unless for health reasons, a quitter. Could have privately told the Administration that this would be his last year. That would have given them a headstart on looking for a replacement.

Maybe Jason should have titled the thread "Monday Night's Spineless Chicken Cook" and it could have flown under the radar.
