  • Just finished up Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire series.
If you liked Longmire you should like the Joe Pickett series by C.J. Box

BTW Longmire's town of Durant is based on the real life town of Buffalo, Wyoming.  Next time you're in the area stop in at the Busy Bee cafe for "the usual"...

@UncleFred ... Thanks for the input. Have to drag myself off to the brick and mortar library for the one book of his that isn't published as an e-book ... last one of his left to read.  Never thought about it before, but both main characters do have similar personalities.  Both authors are easy reads ... kind of like popcorn for the brain.

Franklin BBQ book just arrived yesterday.

Looking forward to looking it over this weekend while doing some low and slow, and drinking a little whiskey.

    Should be a nice Saturday.

In the last month or two, read Dune (book better than the movie), Jaws (movie better than book), The Martian (great book, looking forward to movie), and currently starting Harry Potter (seriously-I'm not even a kid). I really like having a bunch of books available on my kindle.

Of Mice and Men is the best book ever.

Read it a couple of times.  That book keeps me humble and thankful for my place in life, while chasing the American dream.  Grapes of Wrath is the same for me as well.  Steinbeck requires me to think of my most humble of beginnings, and how fortunate life has been for me. His work fortifies my decision to act on behalf of those less fortunate.  There are so many that need help struggling in a world most will never know.  Yet, I will sit outside, next to both my green eggs, and read Steinbeck.  That is why I always make two meals on each cook.  One of the meals is for the women's shelter, or other charity, and one is for my family and friends.  It may not be much, but it is something.  I try to as much as I can, and know it will never be enough. But as the characters in the novella, they keep going, hoping to make it better, I try to as well.

When I first decided to try HP, I felt "jeez, another Tolkein/Cinderella rip-off" - but after a chapter or two, I couldn't help get into the story.  It is really a great series.  Have fun!  BTW, Dune is an old fave, The Martian was great and very funny.

My younger daughter started reading HP before anyone else in the family.  My wife and I followed her example by reading along with the "Chamber of Secrets." Each new release became a family adventure.

She beat her older sister by reading LOTR complete when she was 8, compared to sis at 12,  and me having read it at age 17, tho' I read it in three days.

I read a couple of the Dune episodes in Analog mag, and bought the whole thing in the Ace paperback edition, I think I shelled out all of .99. Was both thrilled and mystified. Far future, must fight with knives because faster projectiles will be deflected. And then, what the H is a planetary ecologist?

The later books declined, I thought, until that last one or two before Herbert died. The ones by his son and collaborator didn't quite catch w. me, but I suppose I should check the more recent ones out.

And in a parallel line, anyone read "The Stars My Destination," by Alfred Bester? I was honored, I think, when my youngest son drew me a father's day pic being Gully Foyle.

I'm always blown away that Lolita was written in English, which was Nabokov's third language.  Great novel.

Just finished "The Dog Stars" by Peter Heller.  One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while.  An interesting post-apocalyptic setting and plot. Read it on Kindle

I have. Epsilon on Soma here. A few of his writings are heavily laden with pharmaceuticals. In fact, his work, on his experience with mescaline inspired a young Jim Morrison to call his band "The Doors" based on the book "The Doors of Perception." Could the BGE be a government plot to pacify the most rowdy of the population? Loss of individuality, self medicating with adult beverages?

  • I just finished Killing Reagan by Bill O'Reilly. Started on a Friday night and finished Sunday afternoon. Prior to that I read a 4 book series by Larry McMurtry called "The Berrybender Narratives". The 4 book titles are Sin Killer, The Wandering Hill, By Sorrows River,  and Folly and Glory. Great western books and they should be read in order. Goal is 2 books per month in 2015.
  • I'm holding out for the sequel: "Killing Bill O'Reilly".

I read it about 20 years ago. I enjoyed it, along with Brave New World Revisited. Both on my re-read list.
