I am not a Raiders fan by any means,  but I am a fan of Kenny The Snake Stabler who died this Saturday of colon cancer.http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/ken-stabler--raiders-legend--passes-away-at-age-69-225802393.html
College football and NFL great Ken Stabler has passed away at the age of 69, his family confirmed. After starring at Alabama, Stabler spent 15 seasons in the NFL with the Raiders, Saints and Oilers. He was named MVP in 1974 and led Oakland to victory in Super Bowl XI.

I grew up watching him play! Wasn't a Raider fan, but I got a kick out of him throwing a ball to Fred Bilentikof with all the stickum on his hands. Then they would go to the sideline and Fred would show him all the stickum and they would laugh! The Snake lived his life to the fullest, and I'm sure he had a blast! RIP Snake.

Ken Stabler is the first player to pop in my mind when I hear Oakland Raiders.
He should be in the NFL hall of fame. imo

Without question or doubt he should be in. He was one of the greats.

As many here know I'm a Raiders fan, die hard, season ticket holder, but I am young. I didn't grow up watching The Snake like @SGH did, but I know the greats. Stabler is Raider Royalty. He helped build the house. He will be missed.

A guy called in the local radio today with a Snake story. The caller was a huge fan of the Raiders and so was his father before he passed away approx 2 years ago. He private messaged the Snake while his father was bedridden with terminal cancer and asked him to call his father. He went to sleep and woke up to call from his father the next day,  Stabler had called him that morning. You could tell it was a very special moment for the man that he spent with his father.

    F*ck Cancer.

Survived by 3 daughters and 2 grand snakes.

  • I'll date myself with this, but the Snake was central to one of the greatest lines ever uttered on Monday Night Football. Kenny was with the Oilers towards the end of his career. The camera panned to him standing on the side lines one Monday night. He looked old and totally out of place in that Oilers uniform. This prompted Howard Cosell to say "There's the Snake looking like an old man". Dandy Don Meridith replied without hesitation "He's just paying the high cost of low living."
That quote popped in my mind when I heard that he had died. Great line and a great player...

Two great moments in Raider history belong the Kenny Stabler-the Clarence Davis catch to beat the Dolphins in the 1974 (now we are talking aging :) ) playoffs and the forward fumble and fumble again touch-down to beat the Chargers in 1978 (that led to the rules change).  He epitomized Raider Football in the 1970's.  Rest in Peace Snake.

    I'll date myself, also.
I was in my 40s during the Raiders glory years of the "70's.
To watch Stabler bring bring the team up on the ball and do everything but point to Upshaw and Shell and say 'we're gonna run here, what are you gonna do about it?"  Then Pow! Van Eghen for 8-10 yards!  That was kick-a**  football.
Thaat, along with Snake's passing game made Sundays special.
Rest well, Kenny, you will be missed.

  • I love NFL football!!  Ken Stabler was one of the greats!  To have a rule named after you is awesome!  The Ken Stabler Rule aka the Holy Roller Rule (only the fumbling offensive player can advance a fumble in the last two minutes) is icing on the cake!

(I'm waiting for the rule about the officials having sole custody of the game balls before the game to be known as the Tom Brady Rule!)
