I have the ceramic one. Your dealer should have them.

cost alot more but the adjustable rig option from the ceramic grill store is a better more complete upgrade, gives you alot of cooking setup options

Congrats on your Egg!! I second the adjustable rig. I bought a plate setter and used it for a while. Once I bought the AR I can say it's the best purchase for my Egg so far. Lots of versitily. Call Tom at The Ceramic Grill Store and he will help you make an informed decision.

If you have your heart set on a plate setter or eggconverter or whatever the're calling it these day - buy a Woo 2 to go along with it. You'll love it!

+1 on the AR.  Don't bother with a plate setter.

I feel like I am in the minority here. Maybe I need to get an AR!

@johnkitchens I'm still redneck rig in the large, but bought a woo and stone when I got the MM. Have to admit, I like being able to pull it all at once. The thought has crossed my mind more than once to pull the trigger on the large.

I just bought a dozen of the cast iron plate setters and grabbed one for myself.......they're pretty nice.  Love the griddle cast into it.

Get a cast iron one or an adjustable setup from Ceramic Grill Store.  The original ceramic one has served me many years, but I have had two of them break (one under warranty, and another my fault when something fell on it.)

Love my AR, but if I were just getting a plate setter, the cast iron ones intrigue me.  I may get one in addition to the AR at some point.

Nope John. My LBGE is still using a PS and a homemade raised grid (works sufficiently). Now had I known about The CGS and AR back when we first started egging I probably would've opted for the AR.

I have the adjustable rig and the Woo2 with the plate setter and use them about equally. Buy the plate setter from your local dealer unless they are way out of line on the price if you go that route.

I use a home made raised grid with my plate setter on the Woo2 made from an oval rack from the Ceramic Grill store and like that set up a little better then the AR. I feel my homemade raised grid is a little more stable then the one Tom sells, at the one he sold 4 years ago.

They're really nice since they love the heat.  I haven't used it with my baking steel or salt block yet, but I imagine both are going to heat up faster without the ceramic in the middle.  Might use my old plate setter for L&S and the cast iron one for the hot stuff.

One thing I have been doing with the Large model, set it in the corner of my XL.  I seared some salmon on it, then put it skin side down over the fire for 5 minutes to finish it.  They make one for a XL model, so if I ever break the ceramic one I'll probably get that.

Like Hungry Joe, I have two set ups:

#1) Plate setter, PSWoo2, normal grill grate, PSWoo extension, and D-grill

#2) AR rig with oval stone, two oval grill grates, an AR extension, and another D-grill

I use my plate setter combination the majority of the time.  Since there's only the two of us on a large egg, it has handled everything I've cooked on it.  When we have lots of company, then I drag out the AR and pretend it's an erector set to get an extra piece of protein in the egg.  You can really get a lot of stainless steel dirty when cooking with the AR rig.  I love the simplicity of the plate setter/PSWoo combination.

Oh yes, I do have a spider with a cheap Weber grill for searing steaks ... CI grill is on order to replace the Weber grill.

It still baffles me that Big Green Egg considers a Plate Setter an accessory. Every Egg should come with one. Also, how does a dealer even allow someone to purchase an Egg without selling them a Plate Setter?! Without a Plate Setter type device the Egg is basically a $1K grill...
Same reason they don't come with the DFMT, ash tool, etc.  Accessories add up quick at the point of sale.......

Of course, that's obvious. I understand not buying a pizza stone, peel or any other unnecessary accessory, but not buying the essentials seems a bit ludicrous.

Thanks for the lesson. That clears everything up...

Just so I'm clear, you make the $1K plunge on The Ultimate Cooking Experience and can't spend the extra $60 on a Plate Setter...

BGE's were around for 20 yrs before the plate setter ever came out.  I egg'd for over 10 yrs without one.  I think they debuted around 2000-2002??

probably why i never jumped on the bandwagon, 2002 we all used bricks =) 60 bucks makes a nice down payment on an adjustable rig

Setter has value IMO. With one egg it does give you the ability to turn your grill into an oven. BGE has made the call on why it is sold as an add on, must make business sense to them. My dealer gave me 50% off when I bought.
I like it even better now with two kamados. The setter is the indirect roaster and pizza cooker, the other can do grilling. AR is a nice add on, I've just found other ways to get the job done. (Setter is for MBGE so lifting it in and out is not a big deal, I might think different if I had a LBGE or XL)
