Kids First Broken Bone

Well yesterday I picked up my son from summer school and he said he fell off the monkey bars and hurt his right wrist, but the nurse didn't call us.  He was able to use it and we thought he was just milking it.  Well today the nurse called from school and said when he was doing crab walks he hurt it again and now it was swollen with a bruise.  So I left work, took him to his doctor and he said I think it's broken.  Next stop the emergency room.  Well he slightly broke the radius bone near the right wrist.  They couldn't put a cast on because it is swollen so they put a splint on it for 5 days, then I need to take him to an orthopedic doctor to see if it needs a cast.  He didn't cry tell he found out he couldn't swim tell they put a fiberglass cast on it.  My wife was harder on him yesterday and she feels bad.  He is done playing T-Ball, but can test for his next belt in Taekwondo. It's going to be interestingly for a while.

Been there, done that, and have the shirt to prove it.

Glad it was caught so it can heal correctly.  If he needs a sling PM me.  We have a few custom slings we made for my son.  They are way more supportive and comfortable than medical ones.

I bet your boss was like, sure, work for us for 30 years and then use the "my kid broke his arm excuse to get out of work". Lol. Seriously though, hope all goes well with the healing.

Speedy and full recovery for him, hope it all turns out OK.

When #1 son was 3 he did a super Grover off a slide and broke his left elbow - he is a southpaw. He immediaaately started throwing with his right hand, still writes with his left. His glove hand, left or dominant hand for him, was unreal as a baseball player.

I still recall taking him to the hospital - they seperated us and asked what happened. Did not think of it at the time, but I guess the medical folks were checking tto see if he hurt himself or if he had been pushed - thank goodness he gave the right answers.

Shake it off.  1000 feet of crab walks.  (whatever they are).

Seriously, sorry about the break.  Good learning experience.  I've broken a bunch of bones, mostly as a kid.  I was fearless.  Then I grew up.  Somewhat less fearless, but wiser.  Takes much longer to heal as an adult.  Get it out of your system.

Broken bones are no fun anytime, especially for children in the summer. I feel for the little guy, his mother and, of course his dad.
We are hoping for a fast and clean healing process, so he can have the fun he deserves.
    Best wishes to you all.

That sucks, sorry to hear it.  We have all been there, but our kids are pretty adaptable and spring back quickly.  My oldest (Out of college now) ran into a wall running down a fly ball when he was in elementary school and split his chin enough to require 6 stitches.  My daughter slipped off the soccer field and into a drainage ditch when she was 10 and hit the end of a drainage pipe.  That one bled pretty good and required a trip to the E.R. for 27 stitches. She went on to play soccer for another nine years...

Here's to a quick recovery for both of you!

Thank you everyone for the kind words.  I think he is mostly embarrassed right now.
@Ozzie_Isaac, they gave us a sling at the hospital, but he doesn't like using it.

@theyorksonyou, those are cool, but I think it wouldn't get here tell next Wednesday when he should be getting a cast if he needs one.  The doctor at the hospital said if he did, it shouldn't be for very long.  I told him he could help me coach at his last 2 T-Ball games.

@EagleIII, I have had my share of stitches and as an adult staples.

He is going to get some special treatment for awhile and he will like that.

How old is he?  If its a simple buckle fracture, you can get away with a regular wrist brace IF the kid can be trusted to behave.  Most casts, even though they are fiberglass outside, the insides are not usually water resistant.  The goretex crap that is used for "waterproof" casts usually make them much thicker and less conforming to a fracture, making it easier for them to shift and move.

They are thermo-molded to the arm and allow swimming and water-based activities.  I've used them here in the Atlanta area.

Sorry to hear @Ladeback69.  My son and i have both been in hard casts in the past year for wrist injuries and both train in TKD.  I continued to train with the cast, but my son (whose break sounds similar to your son's) was not allowed.  From personal experience, make sure your son has practiced techniques with the cast on before testing.  For any advanced techniques, the little difference in weight and motion from the cast can have a big impact on  balance.  I never fell because of the cast, but I was a bit unstable a couple times and i am not a beginner.  Anyway, I wish your boy a speedy recovery and hope he doesn't miss much water time.

Sorry to hear that.  Hope he heals quickly.  Seems boys tend towards breaking bones in the spring or summer and screwing their up swimming activities.

Do take @Ozzie_Isaac on his offer of a custom sling.  His son had a bad break and hated the sling that the hospital provided ... not much better than a large handkerchief.  Spent some time experimenting and came up with a simple design that works well and is comfortable.

Let's just say I am surprised it hasn't happened sooner.  He likes to go at everything hard and fast.

Thank you @DaveRichardson and Jason @theyolksonyou.  I will look into it.  He see the Orthopedic doctor Tuesday morning, but I may order one of these.  Which on is the best.  Dave, he is 6 and a 1/2, 46" tall and 46 pounds.  It is not a bad enough break to need surgery.  It is on the inside part of the radius bone on the right wrist.  He doesn't seem to mind the splint and this may be the way to go.

@QingEsq, I think he will be ok, I hope.  He is in Tiger Tots and is going from orange stripe belt to green strip belt.  He has to do elbow block and a knife punch with is hands.  I will see if he can do them tonight and they usually put them through a warm up before testing if we get there early.  Apparently he is not the only kid to brake a wrist or arm this year in class.

The Exos is one that needs to be fitted by a trained individual. They are wonderful and a great alternative to casting in stable fractures.

Donjoy might be able to tell you who in your area uses them.

I did get hold of a rep in our area, but she does not cover our hospital, but is going to have the person who does to contact me.  If I can get this for him he will be really happy.  Thank you again Dave.  Seems like I need to have you on speed dial.
