OT: Need to get a shed

cazzy
cazzy Posts: 9,136
As mentioned, I need to get a shed and wanted to see if y'all might have some recommendations.  Lessons learned or a particular config that y'all are really geeked out about.  Where did you buy it or did you use designs and have someone build it?  I would love to see pics if ya got them too.

Does your local Costco have a kiosk for this? Mine does and offers a pretty good discount over local companies or Lowes/HD.

Cazzy what will be the main use of the shed? Garden tools, riding mower, BBQ pit?

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

    Status- Standing by.

I have been considering Costco as an option but just wanted to see what else is out there.

Garden equipment (push mower), tools, BBQ accessory and lump storage.  Would be cool to have room for a work bench.

whatever size you think you need go up 50% minimum- height of doors and ceiling is also important for ladders, storage overhead, etc. Maybe power if you are thinking of a man cave at some point

Insulate it. It's absolutely worth it. Well, I guess I don't know where you live, but I live in the deeeep south. And it's totally worth it even without an A/C. Just good vent fans.

Just got this shed 2 weeks ago. Don't know the manufacturer, lots of places sell the same kit just with their name on them. Built very well, much better than the Lowes ones I looked at. They truck it in already assembled and place it where you want it and tie it down. You could also move it in the future. This one is 14x16. I got it more for a workshop and place to have a stogie in the winter.

At my old house the shed had a  rollup door on the side, while the front had a standard door opening.  The  rollup door on the side was awesome for getting mowers in and out of.  Wife liked the idea of it looking like a nice out building so it had windows a pitched roof and window boxes all on the front.  In terms of size get it as big as you can afford or are allowed. don't forget that you can always have a loft space in it for extra space as well....You always wish it were a little bigger, it amazing how much crap I have.  I purchased from an Amish builder in the area, they did great work. Similar to this but with rollup door

  • I didnt see a location where you are but if its anywhere in Northeast you could probably find an amish builder nearby that could build you a nice one for maybe a grand?
Those guys usually have a guy that delivers on a roll off tow truck as well
As one of the other posters wrote make sure you have room for what you have now and what you might want in the future, like double doors for a 42" mower deck when you really need bigger doors (ask me how I know this)
    Good luck

Depending on how big your yard is, go as big as you can. Here that's 12x16. Don't buy one of those cheap ones from lowes, have some one build it.  Do a concrete floor.

If you're gonna get power to it, go with a garage door with opener. Make it bigger than you think you need as you'll run out of room fast.

If you have some extra cash and have the room look for something good size.  I also agree with the roll up door option.  It works super slick when moving mowers, tools, etc out of the shed.  The loft is also nice for spare storage.  You maybe don't need room for charcoal anymore but good place to store your wood.  I keep my smoke wood in bins in the shed with my access charcoal.

@theyolksonyou - Probably not. The amount of maintenance required for lawn and snow removal would be too much for my wife and kids when I'm traveling. And I've been traveling heaps for work lately.

@theyolksonyou Haha thanks.  The only reason why I have that picture on my phone was it's one of the beginning photos of the flood in my backyard.  It just happened to have the picture of the shed in it to use as an example of shed size.  A few hours later after taking that picture I had a kayaker kayaking through my backyard. The closest lake is 5 miles away.  So I had to take a picture of the kayaker.  I thought it was hilarious!  I should have tried selling my house as lake lot.  =)

I bought the 8x8 Pinehurst from Costco last year. I'm happy with the quality. The 8x8 fills up fast but it gave me enough room to get my car back in the garage.

Exactly the info I was looking for guys.  Thanks!  I just need to see how much space I can sacrifice and get the biggest shed for said space.  We lack storage and my wife wants the garage back so this might get all my crap in one place.

I built a little one.  My advice: get a building permit and build big.

If you are purchasing a manufactured shed, go a size larger that you had planned. Buy once, cry once is my motto. Spend the extra few dollars now for the extra space you'll wish you had in the future.

Screw that...don't let a lawn keep you from getting that garage!  Hire someone or tell your son that he needs to man up so y'all do man chit in the garage.
