Placing temp probe

Where is good place to set the probe on the grate. I have mine on the left side even when I have the place setter in.

I'll sometimes just clip to my thermo if the grate is full. Otherwise, I like to in the vicinity of the meat I am cooking as long as air can flow easily for an accurate reading. You obviously don't want it on the far extremes where the platesetter doesn't cover.

I only use mine with the PS and run the cord along the back leg on the right side. I just try to keep it a couple inches away from the meat and out of direct heat. I don't have a clip so I use a piece of foil to keep it up off the grid.XL, WSM, Coleman Road Trip Gas GrillKansas City, Mo.

Thanks for the advise, it seems to make a difference where you place it. Still learning the ropes, but the adventure is awesome

I put my grate level probe HERE, like THIS:
Probe is just INSIDE the edge, and over one of the plate setter legs to keep it from direct heat. -
This was not cheap but it holds the probe just above my SS grid.. Found it on bbq guru site, accessory probes area

The probe has to be shielded from the burning lump, else it will pick up direct IR heat and give you a high reading. In other words, don't use a probe for direct cooks, use the dome thermo. I wrap the cables as they sometimes are not in the shadow of the setter, it is more important to keep the probe in the setter shadow for more accurate readings.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

Thanks for all the advise, this was a big help

Truly was helpful. Have only used my probes a few times and one is already coated and looks way older. I will wrap it before next cook!--

I prefer to place mine clipped to the grate above one of the legs of the plate setter. The leg protects from inaccurate readings from direct heatXL & MM BGE, 36" Blackstone - Newport News, VA
