Raspberry Pi is also an option and i know that Pi 2 is coming out or is out. however, if you do some comparative research, amazon fire tv has the fastest cpu/gpu available which makes it a strong contending for streaming HD streams.

    just my 2 cents :)
I agree.  Totally going your route.  While I have an interest and have been researching R Pi, using my existing equipment makes total sense.  Plus, the Fire TV is a freaking hoss....fastest interface I've came across in a while.

Check out Amazon fire TV and then do some research on how to side load "xbmc" or new newer version "kodi" onto it. If its above your tech level, search craigslist and you can likely find someone local who will do the install for you. the going rate is $50-80. thats what i did in ATL. FYI-- i got a guy here if interested.

XBMC is a full media browser which you run instead of the normal amazon/google OS. you can also run this for free on any PC. with this installed you can watch any tv show you can think of, any movie both out currently on dvd or cams or screeners on new releases if thats your thing. there are many HD feeds 720 and 1080p. i have been very pleased with the video quality. they also have live tv apps you can load onto it as well. do some research. this amazon/xbmc combo brings everything you want to your fingertips, except for your local channels for news. there are live sports too although the feeds are just so-so in my opinion. it depends.
once a tv show airs live on tv, you can usually watch it commercial free on xbmc within 30 mins or less of it being over. impressive. its like you have a DVR of everything you can think of.

check out this link for info.

Only thing about the kodi stuff is you need to block the porn that shows up in folders in some of the programs and would show up in searches

Issue: How to I enable and access Adult content in Navi-X?

Explanation: You can go to the following link and place a check mark next to the option for "Display content tagged as adult for the above IP address" and click on "Save Prefs" below. You may also have to "Sync IP" in order for this to work. This button can be located below the "Forums" button on the main page on our Navi-Xtreme website.

  • @jimreed777 I like how you mention the need to block the porn on the XBMC and then provide instructions for enabling it. Something Freudian no doubt ;)

Was with TWC for cable/internet forever and finally grew sick of the unannounced rate hikes. We now have DTV + TWC for internet (fastest available around here) and our overall bill dropped all of a middling $20/mo or so, to around $200/mo combined, but at least we have better PQ, and faster internet.

We also have Netflix, and XBMC/Kodi on a jailbroken Apple TV and an Android Box, which all combined account for about 5% of our viewing. News, cooking shows, and sharktank comprise the other 95% so likely won't be cutting the cord soon.

As long as directv has the Sunday Ticket, I'm on the hook.
  • You guys are killing me. As I type this at my office I am getting a download speed of 2.80Mbps. Yeah that is right 2.80Mbs. Lightning it ain't.

In the little town my office is in this is the best we can get. AT&T is so good to us.

At home the highest plan I can buy is 18Mbps download. This is U-Verse through AT&T I got it about 6 months because before that all I could get was DSL at 6Mbps download.

13 to 14Mbps is the highest I can connect even though it says 18.

To say I am envious of some of you is an understatement!

Comcast has been very generous to me. They raised the monthly cost for my current services by ~ $30.00.

I thanked them by cancelling cable and internet with them.

I will learn to live without their services and keep moving forward.

I cut the cord a while ago. I use over the air HD antenna, Netflix and Hulu, total of $16 per month. Of course I can't watch any live sports except during finals except for football which is the only sports I really care about

I'd love to cut the cable (satellite for me).  I like sports and Food TV to much.  Also my little girl loves Boomerang and Sprout now too.

I have an Amazon Fire Tv box that has been modified with the latest Kodi. While I don't get live broadcast tv - I do see ALL the latest movies (including those in the theatre) and ALL live sporting events.

The box I have can be purchased on Ebay for approx $100-$125, thou if you already have a Fire Tv you could do the set up yourself via instructions via Youtube or me.

I know most people here reading this won't go this route, but in addition to the use of a modified Tv antenna and the use of a Fire Tv, my cable cost is now ZERO!

I am no longer being held for ransom my cable provider. I am now a free man - literally.

I have Google Fiber for internet and TV and am in the middle of a contract, so I couldn't cut it yet if I want to.  Its about $130 for both TV and internet with 1 gb of speed.  I like it so for now i am happy. Also use Netflex and Amazon Prime to.

I cut the cord ten years ago. I cannot stand to watch tv with commercials. We have netflix and amazon prime and I read a lot. I don't miss it one bit.

DirecTV is now offering Sunday Ticket streaming as a standalone product, but you have to be unable to get DirecTV where you live.

So for our main house we have not yet as it is not yet easy enough for the wife to utilize for the Bravo shows that she loves. That being said we have a vacation spot that I only use Netflix, Amazon Prime and Sling TV through the Amazon fire stick and it is working just fine. It's a bit of a hassle to those who are not skilled with multiple entertainment inputs but for only $20/mo incremental, plus internet (which I have to have anyway for work), we are set. Netflix is my general acct, same with Amazon Prime.

That would be interesting as that's what keeps many people with DirecTV. Swanni seems to think it's only for those unable to get DirecTV. http://tvpredictions.com/directv080415.htm

I've been with Roku since the beginning, but they just turned off HBO Go for no reason on our old boxes. Whack.

Considering more rokus, especially with their pandora interface.  Don't have usb on our tvs, so I'm guessing fire stick is out. Though they're only $24 now shipped... Word is they might be updating to stop rooting.

Also running a Xbox 360 on the big ht

next next phase is getting a mondo antenna and either mounting it outside or in the attic...  Anyone know if that's a lightning hazard?

Firesticks don't need USB - they hook up to HDMI and have a USB base for a power adapter to go into a standard plug.

Xfinity internet and minimum cable 13 channels with HBO runs me $77 month. U have TiVo roamio and minis throughout the house so this option works great with Netflix and vudu and on demand on all boxes. Considering internet only is $50.
