Newbie-When Teak Speaks

Just joined Egghead Nation. Glad to be aboard. Got the XL in February but still won't give up the Weber Bullet, which got me started on the delectables of smoking almost 7 years ago. I must say my egg has clearly raised the bar, or was that a beer I raised at the bar, I get confused. Used both cookers in tandem Memorial Day weekend and they made quite the team. But for day-to-day smoking, we defer to the BGE. Anyhow, just finished my teak table and gave it a dry-fit and test drive over the weekend.

Welcome the the eggdiction. I to got started with the Weber Smokey Mountain 22.5. Currently it resides at my neighbors. I have been able to do everything on my XL. Check out my large cook I did for my brothers 60th.

Like the finish on the table. Might want to protect the area in front of ash door
-
I'm on it. Have got protection there now. Will be finalizing the final finish. Where teak's concerned, you have to go the extra mile...it'll be a combo of epoxy and high UV inhibitor varnish. Thank goodness for youtube. Gonna need some jack for that.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

Welcome aboard! Your table is quite beautiful! I'm a woodworker myself and your craftmanship is evident in the final product!

It was the first time I took on teak. Since the stock wasn't exactly cheap, I decided against the picnic table look. I playing around with photo bucket links. Let me know if they work. Thx.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

Doesn't look like I got the links down yet.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. Most eggcellent table. I'm sure you will continue to enjoy the benefits of both cookers.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

That, as you may have guessed, is the sun. And we are glad for it. But the humid summers here are unforgiving...that's why the most I could do back in June when got the stock at the lumber yard was plane down what I needed for the top and glue it up. Did not jump back in till last month when it cooled down. Glad you like what came of the effort.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

Your black bottom boards are particularly classy! Did you ebonize those or paint them?
-
RRP, I spray painted PT lumber black--wood I cut down, planed and bevelled out of old 4X4 posts that laid in the dirt under my deck probably close to 10 years. Planed to 2.25" square, they perfectly filled the void of the 3" leg corners. See the cruddy green posts underneath the newly milled stock; that's what it came from? Then I inserted them under the hidden bracing of more PT wood, insuring the mid-shelf could never collapse under the weight of the XL. Impossible. There are 8 inserts in all, giving the illusion the posts run through the shelves. The teak itself is doing no work holding the load other than being glued under pressure to the PT bracing you cannot see. Before being spray painted black, the PT leg inserts were sealed in multiple coats of water based poly. When the final coats of epoxy and varnish go on, the piece will be virtually impenetrable by the elements. That's the plan anyway.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

BRAVO! Well played! Even right down to the hidden Kreg Jig screws!
-
-
I forgot to mention those pocket screws.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.
-
Very nice work! Kreg screws are smart - teak doesn't glue up well.
I had the same philosophy for the sealing - I used West Marine epoxy on the top and everything received at least 4 coats of spar. Every exposed piece of wood is sealed. So far 2.5 years later, it still looks new.
