Semi-OT. Amusement at the butcher shop.

Went to one of the older butcher shops in the area, today. It was pretty busy, tho' not as busy as the place just down the way where they were taking orders for fresh turkeys. There's a half dozen folks working in the various sections, and I get into the crowd in front of the beef case. Nice young woman in front of me, 2 boys, and her husband holding a grocery list.

We all had to start somewhere, and as is said, there are no stupid questions, but after the lady placed her order for some fillets, she then asked the guy behind the counter.

"Now, do you have brisket?"

"Yes Ma'am."

"Do I have to order it?"

"You can, but there's some right here."

"Where?"

The counterman points.

"Oh, that has fat on it. Is it supposed to be like that?"

"Yes, Ma'am."

"OK. Do you also have flank steak?"

"Yes, right over there," and he points.

And the lady asks "How are they different?"

The fellow's eyes sort of cross, but he regains his composure, and answers, "They're completely different. Well, not entirely, they are both really good..."

"So I can substitute one for the other?"

"Uh, I don't thinks so..."

Baby steps are both wonderful and really funny.

Agreed - but I still feel like I have a lot to learn.

Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

Great story-and we were all beef cut newbies at one time.  Gotta admit though that the flank to brisket comparison seems to be a very big stretch...
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

For a year I cooked most meals out of the first Frugal Gourmet cookbook, and thought it was great food.
    I got better.

Particularly when you can see both of them about 18" apart. I have to think someone told the lady at some point she needed to try brisket or flank steak, and she thought they were sort of interchangeable.

There must be something about flank steak and brisket. I was about to check out of Costco once, with just a prime packer in my cart. Guy in his 30's walks by and says something like "I'm coming over to your house! What is that? A flank steak?" Waves of pity.
