Ode to Molly-We will miss you

OK, this is a post you don't usually see, so pardon me for taking up space on something that is Egg-related in a small way.

Friday night Mr Evie and I had to put down our 14 yr old lab mix, Molly. She was a great dog and a fighter, diagnosed with cancer and given only 3 months to live...she went on to live two great years! The last two months were tough, the tumor had doubled in size but she still had her great spirit, running the fences with the neighbor dog, greeting me at the door, begging for treats.

Towards the end she didn't have much of an appetite, but I discovered she would eat almost anything that came off the BGE. She ate baby backs, spatch chicken, beer can chicken, meat loaf...as long as it was on the BGE she ate it. For awhile it was all she would eat for the most part. Then on Friday, she even refused that, and after Mr carried her up the steps and she could not stand we knew the end was here. She went peacefully with Vet assistance.

She taught me how to live and die...fight to the end, and when the end is near go quickly.

Thanks everyone for allowing me to share this, and no I have not been drinking:). Just wanted everyone to know this great dog, and the role the BGE played in making her last months enjoyable.

I have attached some pics of her ....one of her trying to get in the house so she could get some BGE food!

Have a great day everyone, and treasure every day you can cause it can be too short.

    Sorry for your loss...
  • Condolences on the loss, they are truly a member of the family. She will be waiting at the "Rainbow Bridge".

  • We are going through the same exact thing with our dog Molly as well, a 14 year old basset. She was given 30-60 days to live in January but she is still kicking. She actually just went under anesthesia to have a tooth removed and came out the other side with four less teeth. She's a tough dog that is making it even harder by refusing to give up.

Sorry for the loss of your furry friend! I have been in the same spot as well and it's great when they hang on longer than expected, just tells you how much they love you.

  • Sorry to hear about your Molly.  We had to put our Molly down 2 weeks ago at 13 - she too was a heck of a gal and a beloved family member and hunting partner, and she was also especially fond of egging'.

    Godspeed to both Mollies.

  • Im sure Molly had the best life a lab could possibly hope for and loads of love provided by you and yours. Thats an act of greatness rewarded by a lifetime of unconditional love... Molly went home happy and fulfilled....I'm certain of that.

  • Our molly has passed now as well, this is the first pet I have ever lost.
She held tough til the end ... but her lungs finally started to give and there was no winning.
I am still glad we gave her the two weeks post-surgery because they were a very full and loving two weeks. She made it ten months when they gave her two, and that was two years longer then the average for the breed.

Thanks so much guys, I am finally able to read these posts. Started to read some...then it got tough. I started thinking of her again today, and reading these really lifted my spirits. They are truly family members, and when they leave us it is so hard. I could come home from work after a really tough day but nothing beat that waggy tail that greeted me! Thanks again all for your kind words.

Time will pass and the tears will turn to smiles when thinking of Molly.

We've lost two Goldens. One with bone cancer. We did the amputation and chemo in hopes of buying two years statistically. She lasted 11 months. Our 11 year old male succumbed to an auto-immune disease.

Our current rescue Golden is getting up there. We're not exactly how old he is but each day is a new one they he still attacks with vigor. Egg dining is in his future!

Bless you for writing. Writing about Peach as we went through the journey and finally crossing the proverbial rainbow bridge helped.

We still have their remains and collars in a special box in the family room. That box is the first thing my wife grabs when the threat of severe weather gets close.

Wow - sad news - sorry to hear this.

I never had a dog when I grew up.  My Wife and I got my first dog (her second) when I was 19.  He's 10 now & still chugging along fine.  Has had a few issues (seizure/brain stuff) but otherwise he's doin great.

Reading this almost made me cry just thinking of my little dude.  Every time my wife and I talk about his inevitable passing, my response is, "nope - he's not going anywhere - he's immortal".  It's incredible to me  how much of a bond we develop with our Dogs.  Those people without them just don't get it.  They absolutely are a part of the family.

    R.I.P. Molly.

Sorry to hear about Molly. We had to put our first lab down in 2011 just short of his 14th birthday. One of the hardest things I've ever done was taking him to the vet that day. He had zero quality of life because of kidney failure. I had to carry him outside to do his business. It was the humane to do, but it sucked. Our pets are our family too. So many great memories we still talk about. Took 3 yrs before the fam talked me into a new dog. Another lab. RIP Molly.

Ya, I read the book about a year to two before the movie came out.

I told SWMBO that I was pissed and going to call the author!

    He likes to nest symmetrically.

You can see a painting of Peach with a tennis ball on the wall. Putter is blocked by the lamp.
