Pulled pork newbie

Hi, I'm doing a 6 pound pork shoulder(bone in) tomorrow and my only question would be about injecting the meat. I've seen it done on bbq tv shows before and I was wondering if any eggheads have tried it and what kind of recipe did you use. Thanks in advance.

If it's your first one, I would try it without.  I'm sure that there are plenty of advocates for injecting on here and that you can improve or alter your results by doing so, but it's probably good to have a baseline to compare against for future experiments.  Pork butt will stay plenty moist without injecting.

@yolkedout‌ Welcome. I would stay as basic as possible on the first one.
As far as injections go I've used commercially produced and homemade. I prefer the homemade with a apple cider/juice base and add spices and vinegar to taste. Moisture retention on a butt in the BGE isn't really a concern. You can go L&S or turbo. I prefer L&S personally.

If you are wanting to inject for the sake of trying a injected butt here is a basic pork injection that works great.
    4 cups apple juice.
    1 cup white distilled vinegar.
    1 cup of sugar.
    1 cup of salt.

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

    Status- Standing by.

Doing a pulled pork for the 1st time I think I would forget injections. Now if you were going to do a slicer I would inject with most of the injection in the money muscle.

1st advise quit watching bbq on tv. What I do for a competition cook to what I do at home are 2 different cooks all together. Just my opinion

@SGH‌ how large is your butt to inject that much? Talk about junk in the trunk. :))

I usually only have maybe 16oz of liquid when I inject. I didn't really see much of a moisture difference. But, it did impart some flavor. I used about 16oz apple juice and dissolved some of the same rub I was using. Pretty simple injection.

@yolkedout‌ Again I would personally go basic. You'll love it. Just be patient and have plenty of refreshments to inject the cook while he's waiting. ;)

I've done a lot of butts and have never injected one. Don't even own an injector. Good eats though!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
