It very well could be real. A lot of parts and inwards that are discarded in the USA are both used and consumed in other country's. I can't say if the particular photo is a farce or not. But rectum is a delicacy in some third world countries. If the rendering plant in question has found a over seas buyer then yes it most certainly could be real. All that being said I have cleaned and processed more than my fair share of both swine and bovine and I do not ever remember encountering a rectum bone. A pelvic bone yes but not a rectum bone. That leads me to believe that for inspection purposes only that imports and exports must be labeled boneless or bone in no matter the cut. Again the above is my sentiment but not known to be fact.

I have always heard when they butcher a pig the only part they can't use is the squeal!BTW NPR had a piece last year on the very subject that sliced hog rectums are routinely passed off as calamari. They even had several chefs prepare them for groups of tasters and as I recall the consensus was the taste was indistinguishable as was the texture! On top of that the fake ones got better ratings than the real squid!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

Edit: SGH postulated that designation was required for export. Some countries, like japan I believe, do not allow the import of cow bones because of prions - Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy. It's for cows and sheep, so these must be OK. Aghhh!
