Amazon has quite a few selections of Ancho

Ask grocery store manager to order the McCormick powder. My favorite is Fiesta Bolner out of SA TX. That is the powder featured in the bulk bins at HEB stores. The nice thing about buying the whole pod is you will be able to toast and grind what you need.
Penszey's powder is my second choice.Large, small and mini now Egging in Rowlett Tx -
@AustinEgghead: I shopped at the HEB near the Dell HQ in Austin many times. Always an interesting experience. I'll figure something out.Everyone, thanks for the help and effort!

Save some money and buy bulk in small amounts. Last time I HAD to buy bottle it was $8 for a small 3/4 filled bottle.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now).

@Egglegal_Alien .....not to muddy the waters, but where I grew up the pasilla and the ancho are considered two different peppers from the same family. They have different taste characteristics, looks and feel.

I went ahead and special ordered it through my local Publix. I was quite surprised when the grocery dude actually knew what it was and even muttered "yeah, we should probably stock it."

Buy direct from Penzey's. Over $30 they ship free to the lower 48. I have not had a bad "spice" experience from Penzey's. Check your spice cupboard, along with the Ancho powder, get some Mexican oregano, some Turkish oregano. You like heat the Berbere is awesome and true taste of north Africa. A staple at our house is the English Prime Rib rub. Easy to fill the $30 and the ancho is very good and very reasonably priced.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

I got mine at the publix in Johns Creek, GA._________________________________________________Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story!Large BGE 2006, Mini Max 2014, 36" Blackstone, Anova Sous Vide

kroger has it labeled as Kroger brand in the cheaper tin container spice section. I was looking in the more expensive glass container section and it was surprisingly not there.Richmond and Mathews County, VA. Large BGE, Weber gas, little Weber charcoal. Vintage ManGrates. Little reddish portable kamado that shall remain nameless here. Very Extremely Stable Genius.

There is a Trader Joes a couple of doors down from Penzy's as well. If you go there, get cookie butter.Warning: Highly addictive.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Ancho chiles, and pasilla chiles are not the same. You have a bag of two different chiles, essentially a bag of whole chile powder.BrandonQuad Cities
