Short torches are ok, but the weed burner above is much safer.  Allows you to keep hands and especially eyes away from the flame and sparks.  Of course you should always wear gloves and eye protection, but sometimes ...

I use heavy gloves and eye protection. That said, I have never had a problem in 100's of lights. I also use the MAP-Pro torch in my shop, so I get double benefits for having it.

@paqman I paid attention to the butane canisters at a store this week, it's $4.99 for 4x 8oz canisters, regular price.

My Bernzo torch uses MAP or propane.  I use propane in the blue bottle and they're $3 apiece and last for 4-6 months.  I cook a couple times a week minimum.  Any cheaper than that, and it would be splitting hairs.
