OT - grid washing OCD!

I'll get flamed for this, please play nice!
I habitually soak and clean my grids, except for CI and XL (won't fit laundry tub) grids, long before bbq-wire-brush-bristles-in-the-food incidents started popping up in the news.

Hey, I won't flame you and I do the same thing from time to time, but here's a handy hint. Go to any good hardware store and buy yourself a replacement metal garbage can lid. When turned upright it makes a nice big, but shallow pan to soak and scrub your grill in! And SWMBO won't get mad when you start cleaning them in the kitchen! And a great product for cleaning is this!

@RRP - great idea, thanks! will be a challenge finding one large enough for the XL grid though.canuckland

Wait. You're supposed to CLEAN 'em?! Seriously?
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I tend to open er up after a low and slow and let it hit about 500 and go for an hour or so...that tends to clean off most everything. Other times, I will fire up my cast iron seasoner / bun toaster (the gas grill) and put everything in there for an hour or so and that also reduces most everything to ash on the grids as well.ME CLEAN WITH FIRE!!

Thought that was why you started the fire BEFORE being ready to cook ]Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now).

I thought all that black stuff is what they called the Flavor Train?????Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ....

Really...i've been egging for a few years and my grid has never seen a sud. I always put it face down on the fire ring while it's heating up, then hit it with a foil ball. Haven't killed anyone yet! :PJust a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ....

When you start the egg the next time, either before you cook or after, let the heat and fire do the work...
It's like a self cleaning oven if you give it a chance..
Anything that remains, that's meant to happen to bless the next cook.

I use clean grates when assembling cooks inside for cooking classes and for company. While us eggers know an often used grate needs no regular cleaning newbies or potential buyers - at least in the past - have wrinkled their faces, said YUCK! and pick at their food. I find starting with clean grates makes that problem disappear!
