Those are the metal bands that bind all the slabs.  When all the wood unfit for furniture/lumber leaves the mill bound for the charcoal plant, that what they use to hold them together on the logging trucks.  Eventually slabs get stuffed into the kilns, and turned into charcoal.  The charcoal falls apart and you'll have a couple dozen of those bands in the pile of charcoal.  Usually they pull out of the charcoal in one piece (a full ring), but sometimes due to the heat and front end loader hitting them, they break apart.......that's what you have there.

Next time, cross your fingers for an arrowhead or civil war era bullet.

At least it's not a rock. Rocks weigh more, the metal straps are light enough you probably got the lump you paid for.

Either a rock or a piece of strapping weighs less than an ounce or two.  There are a minimum of 320 ounces of charcoal in each back, so it's well under 1%.

Either way, you'll find most 20# charcoal bags have over 20 lbs of charcoal in them.  Ours are just over 21 lbs including the bag itself (which weighs just under a pound.)  So, even if you found 2-3 rocks in our bags, you would still get your full 20 lbs of charcoal.
