btw should i mix the lump coal and some hickory chunks when i cook this chicken tomorrow?
-
My preference is no wood with chicken as poultry tends to really absorb the smoke but its up to your own tastes.Clarendon Hills, IL

I live in Raleigh and the winters here aren't that bad, little bit of snow and ice sometimes, my question is can i keep my egg on my back porch during the winter time or does it need to go in the garage?

i do cherry with all poultry. really adds a nice sweet note to the bird.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

You're doomed! It all started for me this spring, with one Large, then a Medium, then a Mini, then a custom cart with granite top, then some toys. I have never had more fun cooking. Welcome and there are some great folks on this forum to help.Large, Medium, Mini, and Mini Max, a few too many accessories, 2 kids, 1 dog, and original wife. Lover of winter, powdery snow, and lots of golf.

+1 on letting the lump smoke burn off. i usually let it go about 45 minutes before putting any food on. that way, i'm sure to satisfy swmbo as she really dislikes the lump smoke tasteLBGE, Marietta, GA

Welcome to the madhouse. As a newbie here, I find the Egg is like a new born child - you get tons of great advise on what to do when you get it home, but at the end of the day you what works best for you and your Egg. Tons of wicked, awesome advise, but don't be afraid to customise to suit your own unique taste.
Enjoy! -

Buy a young yard bird and try a spatchcock chicken. Keep the legs in the back where it's hotter, cook direct around 350-400 until the breast is 160. Try raising the grid if you can, if you can't, keep the temps down to 300-350.

We're in upstate SC and ours stays on the deck year round. We have a cover on it when not in use. You will find that even in snow and ice, the egg cooks just like it does any other time of the year, so if your power goes out, you're good to go where egging is concerned. Once it gets to temp, it stays to temp.

Got it put together, now it's time to do some cooking! Every egg deserves to live inside right? Lol

Welcome to the Club, best decision I ever made when it comes to grilling!LBGE 2013 Located in Savannah, Georgia

Read buckeye bob above. That was my 1st rookie mistake. Got to burn off the VOCs, the nasty smoke. Give it 20 minutes. Also give it the smell test, the early smoke smells strong. After about 20 minutes the strong odor is gone and you get the pleasant charcoal smell. Don't rush it.

I use an electric starter and love it.Welcome to the board.
-
Some board members dislike the electric because you have to allow it to cool and was always worried about his kids running around in the grill area. I can see how that could pose a problem.
-
I gotcha. I have no kids so I should be good then. When roasting a chicken is it best to use the plate setter?s_austin_egger said:Some board members dislike the electric because you have to allow it to cool and was always worried about his kids running around in the grill area. Looks great, you are off to great start. I don't remember my BGE's ever being that clean.1 Large BGE, 1 Mini BGE, 1 Minimax BGE, Original wife and 3 dogs living in the heart of BBQ country in Round Rock Texas.

My BGE was never that clean because I bought a demo egg. They do look real nice before the first cook. I look at it that mine was experienced when I got it. Welcome to the ride.Gulf Coast FL

Love the electric bge starter. Its the way to go IMO.
Got 2 little ones, unplug and place it in a safe spot. It cools down fairly quick.Seattle, WA -
The wife bought me a looft liter for Father's Day and I think it is the greatest thing ever. Of course I've only used that and the starter cubes but I will not be going back
