Cowboy Lump - Disappointed...

Way too much ash - almost an unbelievable amount. Will not be using it again.
Any Eggers from the NY metro area - where do you get your lump? I've never seen Ozark Oak or Weekend Warrior around here but hoping someone knows where a secret stash is.

WW might be easier to find up there. I think they are in Maine.....or one of the other city-states up that way

That sucks......I just started a bag of Cowboy on a cook yesterday that I picked up for $9.99 for a 20 lb. bag and was really pleased. I've used Cowboy before and have had pretty good luck with it, but this bag is probably the best I've used of any brand as far as size, consistency and lack of dust/small particles. It also really seems to cook well. Maybe it varies by region, but I was totally happy mine.

Check out the WGWW web site for local distributors-gotta be one close.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

Cowboy is trash. I would pay for the pricy stuff before I bothered with it.

Wicked is in Maine. Go to their site and look at locator for suppliers closest to you.

If you're in NY and have a Wegman's nearby, their store brand lump is made by Royal Oak and is pretty good, especially at 65 cents/pound.

NYer here. Cowboy and RO are the only brands I can find around here. I haven't seen much difference between them and have found Cowboy to be decent enough in the past few years. Used to have a lot of rocks and scrap. Not lately though. My guess is that this is a really regional business, with a lot of variance around the country. A lot depends on how its shipped and stored too. YMMV of course.Mamaroneck

Just finished two cooks in two days with the same load of Cowboy lump and never added any and very little ash. Maybe you had a bad batch? Or again, wonder is this stuff varies by region.

I really think it must vary by state. I know several years ago it was not good when I tried it but I have been using cowboy 20 pound bags for awhile now in Georgia and I really like it.

I would agree that that Cowboy can't be using a central manufacturing facility ad their quality probably depends on the region of the country you are in. I've been using Cowboy fr over two years now and it never fails me. I actually tried Royal Oak and didn't like how fast it burned.Lit said:I really think it must vary by state. It's a shame your local supplier only ha trash Cowboy lump.

As a matter of fact, I was really impressed by not only the performance, but the quality of wood I found in my most recent bag of Cowboy....no weird objects/wood pieces and all seemingly high quality. And it showed during the cook.
