I asked the question yesterday about the egg fading I guess what I really wanted to know is should I try to cover it? I made my table 8' long so the BGE table cover will not fit. I could have a custom cover made if I need it!

I cover mine using BGE brand covers during the summers, but switch to a vinyl coated tarp during the winter months when our Southern exposure deck takes a lot of sun and snow. The protection is more for sake of the table than the eggs, as we can get some nasty ice storms and then of course the damage from freeze and thaw cycles.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

ive got one egg that sits under a snow bank for part of the year, havent noticed any problems, its about 6 years old. i have another that popped out a dimple of ceramic about the size of a half dollar, it was a defect thats covered under warranty, it may or may not of popped if it was covered, i dont know. my eggs get brutalized with snow and ice in the winter sitting on the ground on the windy side of a frozen lake.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I only cover mine if I am going to be gone for a long period of time, like several months. The table will suffer more from exposure than the egg, but several coats of marine polyurethane spar varnish will give it good protection.

I've had a nice cover since last Christmas. Used it twice. By the time the egg is cool enough to cover, I'm asleep. Plus it's a PITA.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Cover my 3 all the time when not in use

Mine are underroof so no.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

Make a cover for your table, if you feel the need, but don't worry about your Egg.

This is from Coverworks. John makes mostly marine covers and uses high quality material that will last.I gave him the dimensions of my table via e-mail and as you can see it fits like a glove and it breathes. You can find him on the naked whiz site.

We cover ours - but like Carolina Q we are usually asleep by the time the egg is cooled enough - so they do get some exposure to the elements until we can get up the next am.

I cover both of mine but not usually until the next day. I do it for the table (Large) and for the side panels (Medium). While most seem to agree the Eggs themselves don't need to be covered, I don't like to take any chances. They are like additional pets and all my pets are very spoiled!

I'm in the "too lazy to cover" camp.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

I cover mine after every cook with a climate controlled garage.

I look at the weather and cover accordingly. It's not so much for the Egg, but all the accessories I leave on the lower shelf of my table.

I took a closer look at my two Eggs. While I said yesterday that I can't tell one from the other, that's not quite true. The eleven year old one has a bit deeper green and the glaze is a bit shinier than the 4 year old one. Also, they changed the mold. The pebble finish is much coarser on the newer one.

I live in the "lake effect" shadow of Lake Michigan. Often enough, if I do not cover my Eggs during the winter, they get an ice shell that seals them shut. Being lazy, sometimes one of them is uncovered, and needs a few minutes under the MAPP torch before being used.
During the summer, I never bother. -
I always cover. I have the BGE cover, after three years it has seen better days. :unsure:I'm ashamed of what I did for a Klondike Bar.

I love that last pic.

Good call, Jeff. The factory will only get so many castings from a single mold. The texture on a finished egg cast from a brand new mold will be crisper and more defined than an egg cast from a mold near the end of it's life. With every casting, the interior of the mold will wear slightly until it eventually becomes too muddled and pitted... then it's and time to replace.
My small egg is slightly darker green than my large... but you really have to look closely to see the difference.
Fun discussion.

the table and stuff on it will need more protection than the egg. I use a cantilever umbrella to cover the egg and me......the cantilever part is cool because the post is out of the way.....twww.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

John, thanks for your contributions to these recent discussions about ceramics, glaze and so forth. Our membership is so diverse that I believe I learn something new everyday that's not even really related to cooking. It's an amazing group of people we have here and I think we all benefit from one another's educations, life experiences and wisdom.
Thanks,

So, does that chicken know how many of his kin have been under the dome instead of on top of it? Great shot.
-
Have my egg on a nest so I use the BGE cover that was included when I got my large. We have problems with pigeons in our backyard so I'd rather not have a 'Big Green & White Egg'.
-
That is one blissfully ignorant chicken.

Aw, are you feeling a little unappreciated? Well, here ya go.
