    Sprites are a lightning phenomenon that occurs in the "mesosphere" and can be miles high.  I've never seen them and they've only been photographed recently.  This image (along with the lightning bugs) was stunning, and a good story from the Australian photographer:

    ...but then it gets even more interesting, pulling in food chains, economic systems, why my terrarium died in gradeschool, and even barbeque.  I really like these videos featuring NdGT and a comedian, they're entertaining and I always learn a few things.

    This is neither funny nor cool, but it didn’t fit anywhere else and not worth a separate thread.
     
    You’ve seen that russian couple who climbed and flew a banner from the top of the Empire State.  I was wondering why no news source mentioned the stupid levels of EMR they dosed themselves with, climbing onto/across a live antenna, but ABC News tonight finally mentioned it.
    I’m not an EE, but worked 5 years in the Electronic Warfare SPO, 12 years in nuke weapon safety, and have taken a couple “software reliability” courses involving X-ray machine fatalities, etc; and know of the Danger Zones in front of radar emitters both on airfields and Navy carriers.  High dosages of EMR can go from later cancer, to sooner cancer, to dying in a painful way in just a couple days; I’m assuming we’ll be seeing more about this couple in the future.
    What I don’t know anything about is what danger the different EMR frequencies pose, microwaves vs. visible vs. UV vs. megahertz vs. gigahertz vs. whateverelsehertz, comm-strength vs radar-strength vs. Havana-strength (I need to refresh on that stuff), and maybe the comm waves from that antenna they climbed thru poses no danger; but like I say, I have a feeling we’ll be learning more sometime in the future.
