Yup, saw that. There's no doubt that Messi is fantastic, especially at his advanced age, but personally I feel Ronaldo is the GOAT.
Even Ronaldo says Messi is lol. I don’t care either way, neither of them sending me a monthly stipend. Both are great players

You can definitely make an argument for that.  With that said, doing that during the World Cup is bad timing as it seems you are likely basing your assessment on their play for their club teams, not the national teams.  Messi is now tied for most goals in World Cup history and his impact on World Cup games has been much more than just his goals scored.  Ronaldo is not in the top 10 (although he could be by the end of the day if he gets at least 2 goals)

I had the privilege of being in the stands in 2010 in Johannesburg when Argentina played South Korea.  Messi did not score, but he was the best player on the field by a longshot and none of Argentina's 4 goals would have happened without him.  The first goal was an "own goal" from a Messi free kick that South Korea couldn't handle such that the ball bounced off a defender into the goal.  Then Gonzalo Higuain got a hat trick with Messi playing a key role in the buildup of each goal.  Some of the articles I read the next day wrote about how "Messi can't get untracked when he plays for the national team" and Higuain was carrying the load...

You present a strong argument, but if we set goals aside, even at his peak I don't feel Messi's athletic ability in anywhere close to Ronaldo's.

Just my $0.03 (adjusted for inflation).

I'll give you that.  My wife took this photo when Portugal played Germany in Brazil in 2014.  Having great seats with a view from very low to the ground allowed us to appreciate the athleticism.  They have hops like NBA players.  And Ronaldo has scored more goals in his career than Messi so that's why I think the issue is debatable.

Yes.  We were very fortunate to get tickets to 3 great matches in Brazil in 2014 with great seats at all 3.  All were obtained in the lottery at initial retail prices of (as I recall) about $220/seat.

Netherlands vs Spain - 1st row

Germany vs Portugal - 8th row

France vs Switzerland - 14th row

My wife took these photos as well.

Messi should've received a red card for this last night. Looks blatantly intentional.

EDIT:  One of the news programs tonight showed a bar-full of Scots, and they were singing along with the United States' national anthem!  That amazed me.

Soccer/football/futbol transends anything else in sports.  Look at the news feeds from the cities hosting  the training camps, nevermind the matches.  Given where were are with the political divides, this World Cup is a much needed tonic.  You see what the intense feelings of patriotism means for any home country.  And yes it is here as well.
Embrace this next few weeks  as the solidarity will then become fast fleeting and for our collective detriment.
    Off mini soap box.

The Ronaldo powered implosion of Portugal is tantalisingly close at hand.   Colombia will be no push-over, so a draw there and DRC beating the Uzbeks all look feasible.

England need to win their next two and rotate, as confidence is famously fragile amongst England squads.  Probably the deepest squad in terms of quality we've ever had - bringing on Saka & Rashford being evidence of that.  I do prefer 'Uncle Marc' Guehi at the back.

I'm not counting Ronaldo out yet.

What I mean by that is that it won't surprise me if he scores some goals in the next couple of games.

I don't think he's still good enough to lead a team to greatness when the offense is almost singularly runs through him and I don't think he plays well enough as a "let's all share the ball and attack as a team" system to lead Portugal deep into the tournament.  They may very well be better off without him as much of the press are saying.

So, that's a long way of saying that they may be better off without him, but I think his pride and determination are still present and I think he'll score more goals that anyone else on the team before the tournament is over.

Saw a piece on the news this morning, folks from around the world gushing over the wonderful food here in the US, gems like Raisin' Canes, Taco Bell, and BuCees.

Nice win by the US today over the Aussies. Had to listen on the radio as I was driving to Ottawa during the match- sounded like it got a little chippy towards end.

Great win indeed. Even without Pulisic. It definitely got chippy. A few cards handed out

We need a draw tonight between Paraguay and Turkey so that the third game doesn't matter - that way they can sit those with yellow cards, rest your stars, etc.

The story of how the Mexican fans sing and cheer for South Korea and call them “brothers” is awesome and inspiring.

I clearly didn't think about the possibility of Paraguay winning last night. Nice to clinch the group with a game in hand.

Eliminates the yellows. Let’s Pulisic rest if he needs it. Would still be nice to get the W against Turkey. Winning our group means we don’t play on 7/4, but we get to stay on the west coast.
