Pellet smokers vs BGE

If you have a BGE and a temperature controller, is there any advantage to a pellet smoker? Trying to talk myself out of buying one.🙄🙄🙄

I would say there is Zero advantage and infact , I would bet the egg will run longer than most " pellet poopers" on a load of fuel, the egg is exceedingly stingy on fuel consuption on long cooks....

I'd imagine there's more disadvantages with the pellet grill than there are advantages. My two friends who own/owned pellet smokers have had multiple issues with either augers or something electrical with theirs. One friend in particular went through 3 pellet grills under warranty. My other friend went from a pellet smoker to a Kamado Joe and wished he made the move a lot sooner.

At times it would be nice to push a button to start a grill. Like most things in BBQ, the more you incorporate yourself into the cook the better the results you will find. Just my two cents....

    Positive-
I think my Recteq Bullseye does a better job "cooking" a pizza than the egg.   Its all I use it for and it was given to me.  Kirkland Pellets are pretty inexpensive and 1 bag lasts forever.

Negative- Its a Pain to clean the ash, it doesnt always self ignite so I have to partially dissasemble and use a torch, as it was shutting down last cook it threw what I think was an Auger error code but I only saw it for a second.   I'll find out next time I make a pizza.

XLBGE, LBGECharbroil Gas Grill, Weber Q200, Old Weber Kettle, Rectec RT-B380, Yeti 65, Yeti Hopper 20, RTIC 20, RTIC 20 Soft Side - Too many drinkware vessels to mention.

Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting.  The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president.

Somewhat late to the party, but my neighbor had a Traeger, I helped repair more than once to get it operational.

A few of these issues may have been from the manufacturing done overseas. There is a history of manufacturing here, then overseas which the quality dropped significantly, then the manufacturing was resumed back in the states, where the quality regained the original stance which made Traegar a popular choice for the set and forget option it offers.

Their grill needed work whenever subjected to long term humid situations. The pellets would gum up and the auger would just stop working.

I am certain pellet technology has since improved and the USA manufactured models help eliminate or minimize this experience.

The Big Green Egg is a versatile cooking unit, it does everything good, but there are some processes which need a work around to make them great, perhaps like any other cooking device.

Personally, pluses and minuses compared, in my experience, the BGE is the way to go. I have owned mine for 15+ years, and own 2. I have an XL and a MiniMax for travel and events.

We have the standard base, which is the same without the big tires. The Comp does look cool though! We just don’t move it much…
