I caught this post over on one of the Primo Facebook pages.
Quick update on Smokin’ Seal…
Yesterday we received the two new gasket design profiles with our upgraded material (a higher temperature food-grade silicone), and we have been working with a new supplier. Great news! Our initial testing is very positive and we will be expanding our testing to some of you over the next few weeks prior to seeing you at the Georgia Mountain Fire & Smoke Cooking Festival on May 16th!
Our goal has been simple:
Build a gasket system that actually holds up, seals consistently, is easily removable, and improves the cooking experience.
We’re not at “launch” yet — we will be actively testing over the next few weeks — but we’re getting close enough that we’re starting to bring more people into the process.
Right now we’re focused on two design profiles and trying to understand:
• Which one holds a better seal over time
• Which installs easier for different grill setups
• What real users notice that we might miss in our testing
Appreciate everyone who’s been following along, providing input, and asking questions — it’s been super helpful.
More updates soon as we dial it in.
Darren

The title was just in jest. I messaged the owner as I was curious about it being made from silicone. (I believe the upper end for silicone is around 500°F) He mentioned that the silicone they are testing is around 350°F. So this particular gasket is for low and slow cooks and removable when not it use.

That’s a hefty ask of Eggers, I think. Egging is already pretty labour intensive (in an enjoyable way, for many of us) - at least relative to gassers. If I had to think about which gasket to run for a cook, I don’t think I would want to entertain that. But more power to anyone who would.WeberWho said:The title was just in jest. Thanks @WeberWho - At this point I'm not looking over my shoulder...but it will appeal to some for sure...but that 350 degree high is a game changer. Plus there was no mention of the price, nor shipping and handling. I'll bet I'll still be the low cost provider - after 22 years of never changing my prices I finally had to bump them up by $1 for a large for instance. Who on Earth would want a gasket that they need to swap depending on the cook? First time they forget it'll be a serious mess, assuming that the food is even edible. And the first time they replace that one with the high-temperature one they'll think, why bother with the orange one?
Seems to me to be a product without a home, looking in the wrong place for one.Somewhere on the Colorado Front Range -

I'm sure it will garner some interest to some folks. I could see it being a band-aid for someone who doesn't want to pony up for a replacement band if something was twisted and tweaked causing a slight air gap. I don't know if there is a need otherwise if you have a perfectly good deal around your grill. I'm maybe missing something. I hope it takes off and I wish the guy all the best!
I love my Rutlands and the service you provide to others! You should add an additional $4-5 per order for your time but I know you're not in it for profit. It's easily worth whatever you ask for your time and expertise!

I’d buy one. It gets windy as heck here and that can effect my low and slows. I don’t see the need for an upper and lower but it looks as easy to install as swapping out the racks or indirect set up or setting up the smobot. Lmk know if he delivers @WeberWho.South of Columbus, Ohio.

My hesitation would be the expectation that you run no gasket for anything over 350? I don’t think I’d want to run no gasket on hotter cooksSouth of Columbus, Ohio.

assassin maybe they think it can go over an existing gasket that’s a little leaky?
edit- did a little research and see that the guys making those assumes gasket is removed.
lava lock is a high temp silicone sealant that specifically mentions bbq grills.
the rutland white fiberglass braid also saying it is for grills
it seems that the market is now including, instead of avoiding, the long standing permatex and fiberglass braid option.

There are Dozens if not Hundreds of 'elastomers' available for test.
Just an example? I've seen all compounds used in semiconductor processing.
Heat resistance is important as is chemical resistance. We used Viton. And Nitrile and Buna-N.
We used a little and Very Expensive material called KalRez which is almost everything proof......
Silicon comes red because of something used in the manufacture....I thought it was iron, but might be off on that. The red is higher temp material.
The key with the egg is surviving a clean burn run. I've seen my dome thermometer get into it's second lap, maybe 800f or so? It took hours to cool...And I think my issued 'felted' gasket lasted 2 or them.....
I saved some of my woven from RRP and may test that.
OH! I've seen that material before in a different form as insulation material in Very high temp (1000c and higher) furnaces.... -
Something I’ve always considered developing was a gasket that sits on the OUTSIDE of the dome - instead of BETWEEN the rims. Cooler temps there, and would zero the adjustments (provided the rims are matched from the kiln (even so, outside should work)).
maybe a “skirt” style gasket that simply drapes over the top and snugs down? Make it tight. Maybe it would stretch too much? I dunno.. a felt ring at the vital area? Work with me here..I mean - who cares if the seal is inside or outside? As long as it seals?Large BGE and Medium BGE
