  • Question for you, @botch…

I know you’re a Mac guy and you also have a strong music background. Have you done much playing around in GarageBand or Logic Pro? Thinking of taking the plunge and am currently building a wish list (new computer, instrument interface, mic, monitors/headphones, etc.).

Would love feedback if you have any (pun intended).

Went on a little spending spree this afternoon to kit out my new egg
There is a lot of green in that picture.  There is a lot less green in your wallet!  Have fun!

@GrateEggspectations - Both are fun to play around with and I will add another - Amadeus Pro - Audio waveform editor/ Sound and voice recording for macOS X. You will also need Digitnow Audio Grabber Connection if you want to capture your old LP's, Audio cassettes, or CD's of music you may have burned in the old days.

Learning curve on the software isn't too bad but is a time sink especially depending on your source amount of pops and clicks. I connect to my receiver for switching between devices. Just need to adjust volume of the receiver depending on the audio source chosen. I have found that limiting the recording sessions to a few songs makes the processing quicker in the long run. Have fun on the journey.

I stole a page out of @WeberWho playbook and sniffed around FB Market place for another PK grill. Found a gent up in Maryland who was selling a couple of them. Made contact and agreed to meet up. Woke up drove across the "Bodacious Bridge & Tunnel" aka CBBT and arrived at his place. Picked up a heavily used PK Original and a never used PK 360 both for for $300. The gent and I got to talking and went into his garage and he had a new in box AF PK. Was not interested to be truthful. He was telling me he was no longer going to do SCA events and had 2 guys stand him up who were interested in the AF Pk. So he asked if I would be interested in thr grill for $150. SOLD. Loaded all 3 in the truck and the "Pk Express" headed back to Va Beach, PK rich, wallet poor.

Thanks for the tips. I will check out Amadeus Pro.

This week, I’ve been playing around with GarageBand and watching some tutorials. Very user friendly.

I picked up a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 v4 interface and some Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X headphones this week. Am now looking into a Neumann TLM103 mic.

We’re due for a new computer, so I think I’ll try to get comfortable with GarageBand for now and then upgrade to Logic Pro when swapping.

A lot of fun, but as you say, time consuming.

Nice to see you posting. Hope all is well on your end!

Neumann mics are the way to go. Used in most professional studios during their time though they were the really high end models (U87 and U47). Bit of a nerd here concerning recording studios. Used to follow Sunset Sound Studio on their YouTube channel because most of the music I liked was recorded there.

Yes, I’d be after the U87 if it wasn’t so spendy, or if I was planning to do anything remotely professional with it. Even the TLM103 is a little hard to justify.

My wife has a small music studio in the basement that is coincidentally probably the quietest room in the house (also the most isolated from the bedrooms). Will probably hang some curtains on the walls to try to dampen the sound and set up in there. If you have any tips for newbies, I’m all ears (pun intended).

Did you do much recording? I’ll have to look into the Sunset Sound Studio stuff.

you can overdamp. I've done it in a live end-dead end listening room.  just killed the feeling of the room. I now am much more a fan of dispersion than dampening. skyline diffusers are your friend.  Pair of km84i here. lovely mics as are all Neumanns

You’ve got some nice gear. Do much recording? Forgive me if I’m misremembering, but I think your instrument is sax?

Did you make your diffusers, or purchase?

What other equipment are you running for recording?

oh, my recording days have been over for years.   My recordings were straight to open reel, reVox (replaced by a now idle studer), or Tascam.

My enjoyment now is listening - diving deep back into my vinyl. That said, I've started in on my trumpet again when nobody is about. Just messing about, barely have 1 octave of range. Want to get my chops built up before I inflict on anyone.

Look at the Apple education deals, I got a package that included Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, etc for 200$ along with a discount on the MacBook Pro.

So… we don’t exchange gifts for special occasions… but I requested this for valentine’s/my birthday (a week apart). Excited to see a postal alert that it is on the way!

Far end! 21st! A friend has this one for field use and I was instantly convinced I needed a whetstone that I can keep in my pocket.

@GrateEggspectations -  Not professional recording - just recording to computer to clean up vinyl pops and clicks to add to my music library for travel and listening at home.

I have spent a bit, on equipment with an eye to recording and cleaning up really old 78 records, some 45's, 33 1/3's, and my collection of cassettes. New Audio Technica turntable with their dual moving magnet head cartridges, a new Yamaha RX-A2A receiver, and a Tascam 202 MK VII dual cassette recorder for dubbing if I want to go that route.
