These lifetime politicians know that there will come a time when they are not in the majority. Breaking the filibuster is like mutual assured destruction during the Cold War just not simultaneously.JohnInCarolina said:

We might as well already be there if the alternative is a shutdown that lasts in perpetuity.DoubleEgger said:

Much of the argument for the filibuster hinges on whether or not you believe real compromise between the two parties is likely. If you don’t think it is, then all we’re going to be looking at is one shutdown after another."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

It’s almost like the shutdown and the antics don’t actually impact any of our elected officials? I think we should make a constitutional change that says “any shutdown that lasts more than 10 days will
result in every politician being removed during next election, mid-term or main-term without an option to seek any elected office again”
we can add other bad behavior that results in immmediate removal - maybe add in a special yearly election if necessary. There is a significant overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest humans - Park Ranger designing bear proof trash cans.

Good luck overcoming the filibuster to get that passed, lol.Ozzie_Isaac said:It’s almost like the shutdown and the antics don’t actually impact any of our elected officials? I think we should make a constitutional change that says “any shutdown that lasts more than 10 days will

Pass the bill. End Obama care. Cut snap in half. Add more conservative judges to the supreme court. Why not make Donald a king......just so Schumer doesn't have to back downOzzie_Isaac said:Could they vote to remove the filibuster, pass whatever they need, then immediately reinstate the filibuster?

Yeah, looks like citizens are kind of screwed with the current rules. Unfortunate that they can really act with impunity.JohnInCarolina said:

They don’t have a majority of votes to likely do any of that, with the possible exception of ending Obamacare.fishlessman said:

As for making Trump a king, it’s not like he has much of any friction at the moment. How would it look any different?
We are in an interesting spot, where either GOP Senators back down to Trump and nuke the filibuster, or Dems back down and give up their fight for extending subsidies. Who backs down first? (my bet is the Dems, fwiw)"I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

They are! And you know what the minority can do when the filibuster is in place? Quite a bit, if you believe it should stay there.fishlessman said:

To be clear, I’d much rather the two parties come together and negotiate, come to some sort of compromise. I just don’t see that happening anytime soon."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

What compromise? Democrats passed the extra Covid supplements with a defined expiration date and without a single Republican vote. There is no thing so permanent as a temporary spending bill it seems.
-
While likely a third tier discussion point here, once this gets sorted out then someone with some stones needs to propose and sheperd a bill that says that when the gubmint is shutdown no one in Congress gets paid.
Let's see who will step up.
Spoiler alert: not one of them.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint. -

I know the Democrats followed the rules when they passed the subsidies. They are the very same rules the Republicans are operating under. Totally up to them as to whether or not they keep them.Gulfcoastguy said:

And no back pay and they forfeit all non-government pay for the a rolling 12 months starting the day the shutdown starts. Add 2 days for every 1 day the shutdown lasts.lousubcap said:While likely a third tier discussion point here, once this gets sorted out then someone with some stones needs to propose and sheperd a bill that says that when the gubmint is shutdown no one in Congress gets paid.

I think that of all the money that they make while in office their salary is like the change found behind sofa cushions. There are speaker fees, stock investments right before a key vote, book deals, all directly or at one remove through relatives. Not calling out any particular names.

Exactly, this why they need to forfeit any and all income. it’s been an interesting couple of weeks on the front page.Buckwoody Egger said:looking forward to everyone’s plan in, what, two weeks?
highlights include “hey look at this dog turd I found, picked up and would like you to also smell and agree it stinks” and “what if we could extend the trump ‘not taking a salary but look at all my untraceable income that i actually brag about’ to all politicians”
some great cooks have been accomplished alongside. however. hope everyone’s doing well. -
As far as legislation to prevent future budget stalemates:"No one leaves the House Chamber or the Senate Chamber until a budget is passed". These wealthy privileged punks think we work for them. That is not the case and they obviously need a stern reminder that they are government SERVICE workers. After that, legislation to make taking bribes a felony is appropriate.

Unless Trump decides to preemptively pardon everyone that worked for him. That is a very likely scenario in my opinion. He’ll claim he’s stopping the witch hunt for the good of the country.DieselkW said:
