being supportive and interested in the 17th pork chop in a world full of adversity is closer to the meaning of life than complaining. also closer to the intent of the forumLegume said:Why would I or should I care about the 17th pork chop post with all of the lawlessness, cruelty and hate tearing the country apart?
if there is a place you can go (in addition to being here) and actions you can take (other than woe and dismay) to make a difference, my advice is to go there and do it

That wouldn't be very true to myself, today, to feign interest in that porkchop. But I don't interrupt it or crap on it either.Buckwoody Egger said:

Complaining, sigh. Is that what I'm doing? Or Ozzie? Sharing of perspective? Highlighting egregious behavior by our elected officials? This forum used to be absolutely crazy with the political threads and drunken “discussions”.
I don’t do social media except this forum - these are generally my friends and I wouldn’t hold anything against anyone for disagreeing with me - many do.
2. Russia planned to use their sizable military to overrun a country that didn’t have a sizable military, especially hardware wise.
3. Ukraine has a self interest to not be occupied and ruled by Russia.
4. USA provided military hardware to Ukraine to fight back the invasion.
Conclusion: USA is using hardware built specifically to destroy Russian (and Chinese) military hardware during an armed conflict. We spent the resources to build it, now it gets use for its intended purpose. The world is safer every-time a Russian (and Chinese) Tank, Plane, APC, etc is destroyed. We are safer, NATO is safer, and no American lives are being risked.
How you value American lives and a safer world I cannot say. I put a high value on that.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
Hey Fish, hasn't he been trying to get Ukraine to settle and let their occupied land go? Isn't he just continuing the policy that preceded him by continuing to supply armament? Don't get me wrong, I'm in support of this, but, not exactly a bold or new or hard to continue policy.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

John Oliver is likely to get canned as part of this also. -

There isn't much more that can be done except to wait it out. Is it 13,14,15. Times now the Dems have voted to starve the children.
. Hard to keep up fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
The Dems have been in DC, all this time, waiting to negotiate with the republicans, who are all in their home states but refuse to hold any town halls or even individual meetings at all (at least in my Red state). Why are they not following the Leadership of their own Cult Head:fishlessman said:Is it 13,14,15. Times now the Dems have voted to starve the children.

Just pass the clean bill and open the govt back up. Both sides want that. Well maybe not..Botch said:

There is absolutely nothing stopping the GOP from ending the filibuster and passing their own budget. You can try and blame Democrats all you want, but this one is on the GOP and the GOP alone.fishlessman said:

There is nothing stopping the D's from voting for the clean CR.
I must say that the filibuster is a needed parliamentary rule for me. You can obviously dance around it has been done in the past but it does force some level of compromise or in this case the wrong approach to eliminate, for what downstream??
I'm with @fishlessman here. There is no need to hold the country hostage.
The ACA and it's benefits (which I support) is now confronting reality of the plus ups (It is extremely difficult if not impossible to claw back supposed "temporary" benefits due to covid). Of note, they expire 12/31/2025. However the D's are using it to hold the clean CR hostage.
MSM has done a poor job of laying out the true legislative calendar here. Pass the CR and then deal with the ACA issues.
Sometimes you've got to look at the country more than your constituents.

Both parties have had times when they would have regretted doing away with the filibuster. It it does as it’s intended and slows potentially rash actions. On this item I agree with Lousubcap
-
The GOP negotiating in good faith after they get what they want? C’mon.

-
In the Senate? The clean CR that passed the House only funds the government until November 21. Then we’re right back where we started. That clean CR is becoming more obsolete by the day.lousubcap said:There is nothing stopping the D's from voting for the clean CR."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

I'm all for the filibuster in theory, but of late it hasn't exactly been a mechanism to foster compromise.lousubcap said:

What the Democrats were told this round is akin to: give us 7 votes to pass this bill, which has everything the GOP wants, with zero concessions to your party, or else the government shuts down. Maybe that looks like "compromise" to you but it doesn't to me.
The reality is that the filibuster remains not because the Senate actually persists as some olde-timey (nod) parliamentary body of gentlemen and gentlewomen, who come together in good faith to negotiate, but rather because the Republicans simply don't have the votes (yet) to eliminate it. That's not all that surprising. There are likely at least 4 Republican Senators who know that if the filibuster goes away, they'll effectively lose all of their negotiating power with their own party."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

Could they vote to remove the filibuster, pass whatever they need, then immediately reinstate the filibuster?

They can do whatever they want. The majority party is free to set the rules in the chamber. They don’t need 60 votes to make rule changes.Ozzie_Isaac said:Could they vote to remove the filibuster, pass whatever they need, then immediately reinstate the filibuster?"I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike
