What is best replacement gasket?

I see all sorts online.    Some are self adhesive and require a seal on lid and 'egg'.....
I see a couple different materials.
One, the 'Rutledge' is only used on one side and you use some kind of hi-temp gasket seal.

I'm officially bewildered.....

wish I'd had a few answers.   the 'stock' felt lasted me a long time, but I'm not exactly a power user.
Last 'hot run' was IT and top gasket fell off......

I'll send off for the Rutledge self-adhesive type.....Which means it's time to Align the TOP for over or under bite......I'll enlist a 'help' so I can carefully unroll, align and make sure it's stuck.....

I don't want to get involved with that gasket seal from Permatex (messy?)   But I must take the top lid off.    I saw a new rear hinge assembly (improved?) for my older egg.....an XL.....

If you are still planning to take the dome off, consider applying the Rutland to only the dome. That way, you won't need to replace the gasket if the base cracks.

    Thanks to all......and yes.....

And yes, again, I suspect the dome MUST come off......unless I can adjust for proper closure.

Until I read the directions, my understanding is that after the gasket is applied, the lid should be
closed for an hour or more.....to assure proper mating / sealing.      Maybe even at that point, light
a small fire to just (not cranking) warm the ceramic and let 'er be......

No - Permatex has to cure for 24 hours uninterrupted! And No - starting a fire will not speed up the cure - it is a chemical cure not a heat cure.

Got it.    That takes some of the pressure off getting 3 things done at the same time.
I can open up......remove lower gasket and prep surface.....than simply apply and let it sit over night.
Next day, I can proceed with alignment / bite.....

I won't let egg close ceramic to ceramic and will have some foam ready if I get called away before install starts.

Just looked at directions for the permatex.    They say 700f intermittent which is fine.    Also 24 hours to 'cure'.    this is consistent with other RTV products I've used...
Is a single 3 oz tube enough?     I may buy a 2nd tube and just be willing to make a return voyage.....
And just to make sure you are paying attention?  They make several 'similar' products under the 'Copper' label.....Ultra Copper (a copper color package) the standard Ultra Copper (I just saw SAME part number)   Than MEGA Copper as a different part #.    All rated to same max temp.

Since it is an RTV product, I expect an awful smell......

Ron will send you detailed instructions. Read carefully, and you will be fine. He can also help with alignment issues.

I don't see this "MEGA Copper" you mention - but anyway for your XL then one 3 oz tube will be enough unless you are real sloppy of an applier and not following the written directions I send with the gasket. Then since you know yourself having a spare 3 oz tube (to take back as you said) that's your call.

And to ZAPHOD?    Smell I was used to was ACETIC ACID, part of many RTV products.   But not all.
    Kind of a vinegar-y aroma...

Thanks Mick! Just like our late buddy Spring Chicken I know we probably will never meet in person...but there is nothing wrong having cyber buddies so I'm fine with that as I'm sure you are as well!

Seeing that you are a car guy then here is my funny picture from today.
I bot an 80x30 interior door to use as a backdrop to secure some shelving in my workshop. I had to use some home spun ingenuity to turn my MB into a suburban pickup! I'm quite sure the boys sitting inside the home center in AC comfort got a kick out of seeing an old f*rt out there in sweltering heat get this task secured for an 8 mile trip home!

Wish I had pics of my hauling 8 railroad ties in my '86 Saab 900T (after I loaded six the suspension bottomed out, so I had to make two trips).

I hear you about your particular story and here is yet another tale of my using that Benz for some unusual purpose...Back a few years ago I was building a vacuum driven sawdust collection network in my work shop tying together my stationary machines.  I designed it to use 4" PVC. So I went to my home improvement center and purchased 10 pieces of 10' long 4" PVC. In order to get them home I stood them up one by one thru my open sun roof!   I swear my car looked like some secret roving military weapon that could launch 10 rockets at some evil country!

Unfortunately my picture of proof died when I told Photobucket to kiss my...well, you get the idea...
