Thanks for the head's-up, Cap'n. I still have two mostly-full boxes from them which will last my lifetime; really liked how the boxes were partitioned and marked with type of wood.___________

Love that place. Sad to see it go, he had a great operation and his retail location was always on my radar when I went to Grand Jinction. Good for him to make every day Saturday.

Sad to see them go, as I order from them all the time. Just put in what will likely be my last shipment from them.
If anyone has suggestions for other online retailers providing smoking wood, please share. What I appreciated about Fruita Wood is that they didn't sell kiln-dried stuff."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

I do have a wood moisture meter (a previous life deal) and just checked a chunk of Fruita and kiln dried-both around 7%. They have been in garage storage for a while. FWIW-

lousubcap said:Interestingly enough depending on how long and when packaged, moisture content in air dried wood in Grand Junction, CO can be in the 6-8% range, but can also be upwards of 10-13%. Commercial kilns cranking out smoke woods generally aim for the 10-15% range window.

i think this is the company that sold their wood to predator pee. was the best sugar maple around years ago. their oval cedar planks make for a great presentation. most of the wood guys up here cut the trees this time of year when the moisture is at its peak, wood stoves burn longer if the splits are only seasoned for 6 months. been so long that ive bought smoking wood i almost fell out of the chair when i saw the prices

The latest email I received today from Fruita Wood-There's still wood to be had.
Quick update: I have just over 100 orders remaining from the 618 I received upon announcing my retirement and eventual closing. I expect to have the remaining order completed by early next week. I appreciate everybodys patience and understanding that it was going to take awhile to get them all shipped. It does look like I will have wood available to re-open the site on April 1st. (no fooling) Between next week and April 1st I will be packaging up all the remaining wood into pre weighed boxes. I anticipate to have the following woods available. Post Oak, Peach, Pear, Plum, Apricot, Grape, Bourbon barrel, orange, Almond. I may have Pecan, Hickory, Apple, and cherry, however there will very little available. The wood will be pre boxed mostly in 30lb and 45lb boxes. Options will be 3x3 chunks, 6x3 mini splits and 12" splits. I will have some smaller sized boxes depending on what my current box inventory allows.
No mixed boxed (u'pick'em) will be available as this will allow me to keep better inventory of what is remaining. Once these boxes sell that will be it for the wood.
I am discounting the bourbon barrel wood to the same price as the rest of the wood as I have an abundance of it and need to get rid of it.
I greatly appreciate the well wishes many took the time to send me. I tried to respond to each one as time allowed. If I didn't get to yours, I apologize. If you have questions, feel free to end me an email bert@fruitawoodchunks.com. This is the best way to reach me as I can replay in the evenings after settling in.

Today's news update-
Quick update: I have processed all orders in the queue. Hopefully everything will be shipped out by Friday March 28th, but no later than Monday March 31st.
I have decided to change things up a bit for the remaining woods I have available. This is going to make it quicker for me to get it processed and on the website sooner.
Starting Monday April 7th, I will be releasing 3 varieties each day. Each will be pre-boxed in 30lb and 45lb boxes. Cuts will be limited to 3x3 chunks, 3x6 mini splits and 3x12" splits. I DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH OF EACH BOX I WILL HAVE! I will not hold or pre sell any wood as a favor. This is because I want as many customers have the opportunity to purchase what is remaining and not have it go to fewer customers in larger quantities. I DO NOT KNOW THE RELEASE TIMES! Could be early AM or early PM
I anticipate the following schedule for releasing each variety: Monday April 7th - Hickory & Pecan, Cherry. Tuesday April 8th - Post Oak, Apple, and Peach. Wednesday April 9th - Bourbon Barrel. These will be to only varieties I will have as the rest of the woods are out of stock.
If you have questions, please email me: bert@fruitawoodchunks.com I don't always get to voice messages in a timely manner so this is the best way to contact me.
I want to thank everyone for the support over the past 16 years. I litterally started this venture on the tailgate of my truck selling a box here and there on Ebay. It eventually led to the website, a small BBQ supply store, then a second website, a larger BBQ store, a catering business that included serving food on site at the BBQ supply store 2 days a week, and an even larger manufacturing storage yard/facility. I could not have done this without the support of the BBQ community.
