Birthday Pulled Pork

Drip tray not full and meat not overhanging it, so where did ^^^ come from?
Double gridding for easy removal. btw, does this qualify as double indirect?

24 pounder took 19 hrs at 260'ish dome temp, even with tight foil tent at 170. Can't understand why my PP always take at least 15 hrs.

@Canugghead my guess is that isn't from the protein, but instead moisture that had accumulated inside the egg somehow and then melted out. When was the last time you used the Egg?
By the way, that cake and the cupcakes are awesome. Purchased or home made?"I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

Never seen a 24lb butt. Happy #5 to the young lad

That's a big (pork) butt! The largest I've cooked is 13.5lbs and that took up most of the width of my large, so I'm guessing you have an XL? The shredded meat looking amazing. As for cook time, the 13.5lb butt took around 24 hours although I didn't wrap it.-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Check your base for cracking.

@JohnInCarolina
Let's get the easy one out of the way first...
Not home made, no masterbaker in this family, lol. Made by https://www.sugar-baking.com/products/custom-cupcakes, our S-I-L's friend and client.
For their second kid's birthday earlier this year they ordered this one, the young ones were confused to see Elon getting chopped up, lol

@Canugghead - On occasion, when doing overnight butts in the winter, I will see a smoke-infused ice sculpture too. The lower lip on the bottom vent collects condensate from somewhere and overflows onto the patio.Good looking food for the party!LBGE, LBGE-PTR, 22" Weber, Coleman 413GGreat Plains, USA

@JohnInCarolina I thought what you said made sense since I have not used the XL in a loooong time BUT...
Lo and behold, the thing is hard, definitely not grease. I had to knock hard to break it. I wonder if it was a piece of plastic in the new lump bag that I missed. The broken base was stuck on the paving stone like super glue, however when I aimed my torch over it it melted clear very quickly and sunk into the stone, no smell and zero residue, WTH is that? Can I send the long piece to a Duke lab?

I couldn't just brush off the ash/crumbs as usual, they were stuck and needed torch and hard scraping to remove. Also, I had to yank hard to dislodge the firebox from the base. Doing a clean burn now.
The pulled pork tasted just fine, but are we safe?

Thanks. It's a whole shoulder aka New York shoulder, butt and picnic are still connected is the best way I can describe it.shtgunal3 said:Never seen a 24lb butt. Happy #5 to the young lad

@Stormbringer Yes the only BGE left here is XL. The whole shoulder is a beast, can crack the floor tile or bottom of freezer if not careful!canuckland

Plastic would have smoked when you put the torch to it.

Good call, thanks. Just finishing the clean burn, will check during the day or next spring.DoubleEgger said:Check your base for cracking.canuckland -
May be there was a little smoke that I mistook as steam, but I couldn't smell plastic and it melted quick and left no residue on the stone.DoubleEgger said:Plastic would have smoked when you put the torch to it.canuckland -

I think @alaskanassasin nailed it.
Brought it in, behaves like ice, based on touch, feel, temp and scraping with knife. Hoping to see a big puddle later.

Just an idea here...have you tasted it?Canugghead said:I think @alaskanassasin nailed it.

Upside down icicle

Yup, the bottom already melted flat. Thanks @alaskanassasin for solving the mystery and removing my worries.
EDIT: Actually @JohnInCarolina cracked it first, I was too dense to understand it

What a short term drama posting-now solved. That pulled pork looks great. Nailed the bark. As always, a great cook for an even better celebration. 🎂Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

My bad. Just reread all the replies and realised @dbCooper was the 2nd one to crack it. Like I said I'm dense, took three of you, @JohnInCarolina @dbCooper @alaskanassasin, to finally get it through my skull. I was too preoccupied with plastic or grease all along

Belated Happy Birthday to the lil one!! I'll bet he tucked in to the pulled pork. Love the birthday cupcakes... we may steal the design(s) for a cake competition the Scouts will be having soon
