Clever Question

I'm sure I will have better responses here than just Google. I just got a clever from my grandma who passed at 96yrs old. When it gets wet it gets surface rust like the picture. What should I do to take care of it?

I saw a video recently where someone soaked the blade in straight lemon juice and it removed rust and developed a patina. Never done it before though.

It sounds like you’re asking about preventative maintenance rather than removal of the rust in the picture, so I will respond accordingly. I recommend you keep that thing dry. As soon as you’re finished using it, wash and dry thoroughly. Never let it sit wet. For storage, you could give it a coat of tsubaki oil, which is what is generally recommended for use on Japanese carbon steel knives.

(Edit: And don’t forget some oil or beeswax to hydrate that wooden handle.)

Are you looking to use it or preserve it?

Depending on how deep the pitting is, I've had some good luck with a fine steel wool and Bar Keepers Soft Cleanser. It should clean up.

Had some luck with lemon juice and then drying immediately after every use. Not sure I'll use it anton but will use it some.
