Well having been in construction I can give some guesses. Since the owner or general contractor doesn't want to keep design engineers on staff, he lets it out to a consultant to design. The consultant has bridge/tunnel design specialists and roadbed design specialists or subcontracts one or the other out. The design build schedule is so compressed the neither the general design consultant nor the general contractor have time to check the complete plans for conflicts like that.nolaegghead said:How the F does that happen? I have run into several projects with conflicts. Sometimes I caught them before the contract was let, sometimes after but before that part was built, occasionally you end up with egg on your face.
Since it has been about 10 years, I will talk about a project that I had. I got to look over the plans for about 30 minutes before they let the contract out for bid two weeks later. I spotted that they had a ridiculously low quantity of crushed limestone for roadbeds and shoulders on it and sent it off with a note that the consultant should recalculate it. They doubled the quantity from 20 to 40 tons or about 1 truckload to 2. Keep in mind that small quantities have a higher per unit bid price and large quantities have a much lower per unit price. Simply doubling the quantity indicates that they did not actually recalculate. I ended up using over 2000 tons. Second issue. I was supposed to repave under an interstate overpass. I smelled a rat and sent a survey team out to check. To make a long story short, if not sweet, to build it according to plans would result in insufficient clearance between the top of the pavement and the bottom of the overpass. That resulted in overruns of both asphalt removal and asphalt placement as well as time overruns to correct. My post project review of the consultant resulted in his company being blackballed. All because I wasn't given the 3 months to review plans in depth before the contract was let that I requested. -

sometimes you run into an engineer that will tell you to drill holes in a part because he thoroughly checked and approved it, even if the dimensions are a foot off the part.....i told the last one i charge for that....and the rework
