OT: Kentucky Derby Day

For me, going back to childhood, this race and the Indy 500 are events not to be missed.
My Trifecta: 1: Epicenter 2: Taiba 3: Ethereal Road
For any that need a Julep recipe I offer a repost from couple years ago...

The Recipe

March 30, 1937

My dear General Connor,

Your letter requesting my formula for mixing mint juleps leaves me in the same position in which Captain Barber found himself when asked how he was able to carve the image of an elephant from a block of wood. He replied that it was a simple process consisting merely of whittling off the part that didn't look like an elephant.

The preparation of the quintessence of gentlemanly beverages can be described only in like terms. A mint julep is not the product of a FORMULA. It is a CEREMONY and must be performed by a gentleman possessing a true sense of the artistic, a deep reverence for the ingredients and a proper appreciation of the occasion. It is a rite that must not be entrusted to a novice, a statistician, nor a Yankee. It is a heritage of the old South, an emblem of hospitality and a vehicle in which noble minds can travel together upon the flower-strewn paths of happy and congenial thought.

So far as the mere mechanics of the operation are concerned, the procedure, stripped of its ceremonial embellishments, can be described as follows:

Go to a spring where cool, crystal-clear water bubbles from under a bank of dew-washed ferns. In a consecrated vessel, dip up a little water at the source. Follow the stream through its banks of green moss and wildflowers until it broadens and trickles through beds of mint growing in aromatic profusion and waving softly in the summer breezes. Gather the sweetest and tenderest shoots and gently carry them home. Go to the sideboard and select a decanter of Kentucky Bourbon, distilled by a master hand, mellowed with age yet still vigorous and inspiring. An ancestral sugar bowl, a row of silver goblets, some spoons and some ice and you are ready to start.

In a canvas bag, pound twice as much ice as you think you will need. Make it fine as snow, keep it dry and do not allow it to degenerate into slush.

In each goblet, put a slightly heaping teaspoonful of granulated sugar, barely cover this with spring water and slightly bruise one mint leaf into this, leaving the spoon in the goblet. Then pour elixir from the decanter until the goblets are about one-fourth full. Fill the goblets with snowy ice, sprinkling in a small amount of sugar as you fill. Wipe the outsides of the goblets dry and embellish copiously with mint.

Then comes the important and delicate operation of frosting. By proper manipulation of the spoon, the ingredients are circulated and blended until Nature, wishing to take a further hand and add another of its beautiful phenomena, encrusts the whole in a glittering coat of white frost. Thus harmoniously blended by the deft touches of a skilled hand, you have a beverage eminently appropriate for honorable men and beautiful women.

When all is ready, assemble your guests on the porch or in the garden, where the aroma of the juleps will rise Heavenward and make the birds sing. Propose a worthy toast, raise the goblet to your lips, bury your nose in the mint, inhale a deep breath of its fragrance and sip the nectar of the gods.

Being overcome by thirst, I can write no further.

Sincerely,
S.B. Buckner, Jr.

The field is quite balanced although Zandon is the opening favorite.  Right now (not attending) although 150+K of my friends will be, I'm playing Epicenter, Messier, Taiba and White Abarrio.  Depending on what the weather is approaching the race, I could jump on the best mudder (that horse is TBD).

@lousubcap White Abarrio is a good pick, only downside is he is gray.  :)

Some moons ago, as a recent high school grad,  I was on my way to college, via London.

Went out with my cousin, to party with some his chums. We ended up at his friend's place, to smoke hash. I didn't partake, because its never been my jam... stuffed my gob with a doner kebab instead.

One dude says something like " I know a bloke, who knows a certain stable hand, who said to bet on _____." It was the eve of the Royal Ascot.

Wouldn't you know it, that horse won.

Inside information? Knowing the field? Coincidence? Or...

Can't help but wonder if that sort of thing still happens.

@caliking - I have heard and benefited from that insight a few times.  Unfortunately I am not that connected here.  So a 20 horse crap-shoot on the horizon.  But party central-

We have OTB in my area so never have ventured into the web betting sites.  The Juleps and ladies in fancy hats are enough for me, anything I might win is just a bonus!

Feel free to substitute bourbon slushies for mint juleps, when necessary.

A month or so ago NBC showed that day's MotoGP race (I missed the first half) and have been checking the channel guide ever since to see if they'd be showing more (so far they haven't  :'( ).  I noticed today that NBC had, what, four or five hours dedicated to the KD??  Isn't that race over in like 2 minutes? Do they have other races during the afternoon, or just hours of Pretty People publicly preening pompously?

    1. 3 big days for derby week: Thursday, referred to as Therby, the locals big day, Friday, The run for the Lillies, (The Oaks) and all day the first Saturday in May. It is an all day event with racing starting noonish, and run a series of high purse races, with at least one race AFTER the Derby. (Sorry for the font.)
    2. Parties have been going on all month, starting in Lexington, (Keeneland) to get some horses qualified for the Derby.  Royalty arrives in Lexington, and stays until tomorrow.

And once again, I contributed to the Churchill Downs fund.  Never looked at  the winner and most others didn't either as he made the field yesterday.

That surprised me as well.  I suppose because the race was at COTA in Austin (raced on that track myself) and there was a slot.  Good promotion for the organization - I know a few people that subscribe to all the races….funny that’s the only TV they watch.

I had epicenter for the win at the Kentucky Derby party I attended. But since no one picked Rich strike those of us that picked epicenter split the winnings. I took home 40 bucks.
