3 year old colt and 2021 Kentucky Derby winner died of a heart attack after a workout. 😓

Heart attack, this is first I have heard of during practice.  Broken legs, torn tendons, hoof issues, or colic are the usual methods a horse is injured and has to be put down.

I have seen horses hit rails right above their eyes, if hard enough, that will kill them instantly, but that is direct trauma.  This is odd for sure, it can happen, but not common in my experience, probably very rare.

Sad for sure! I imagine since there are many Bob Baffert haters out there that some will claim foul play some how some way.

    Medina Spirit's trainer

I’m not sure why the trainer would kill the horse, I would think an insurance claim would go to the owner.

I don’t get horse stuff, especially ivermectin.

No way do they off a Kentucky Derby winning colt.  He was an ATM machine setup to literally squirt money out.

@alaskanassasin is in line with my thoughts.  They juiced him or have been juicing him with something that ultimately killed him.

Yup, at times some of these higher profile horse racing events seem like late 90s Tour de France or late-2000s Russian Olympics.

If memory serves he failed the drug test twice after the Kentucky Derby.

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

I happen to know that he didn’t inhale. Doesn’t count.
  • Sad news for sure. Amazing horse. While highly unlikely, I hope foul play did not contribute to this.

Yeah, you have to wonder. Especially after that Netflix (I think) show about all the insurance fraud horse deaths in the past.

I have not heard of that Documentary, happen to have a name?

There have been a lot of "barn fires" I am aware of.  There was a lady out of Chicago (surprise) I believe that had a long sordid history with insurance fraud and horses.  I think her trainer or someone at her barn finally took the fall, but not before she was killed.

It’s actually on Bad Sport on Netflix. I’m  Almost positive

He electrocuted them and it was very hard to detect. If not impossible.
  • You can be sure if there was foul play involved it will come to the surface sooner than later. I just don’t think that is the case here but I could be very wrong.

Failed one and passed one.  The drug was legal to use, just not have in their system on race day.

From what I have read and heard through the grapevine, this is true. (I suspect my grapevine reads the same news).

Watched it last night.  Wow.  That was incredibly disturbing.  The lack of accountability was something to behold.

  • Part of me wants to watch it and part of me doesn’t. I’m afraid it’s going to confirm a lot of the doubt I already have about the owners and trainers. Love horse racing but hate to see animals mistreated much more than I like racing.
