Dang......that sucks.

I got to meet him at what was then the largest Dining-Out in USAF history, in a downtown convention center in Dayton OH in the mid-eighties (45th AF Anniversary). He had the most intense eyes of any human I've met.
He's also funny as hell. After his after-dinner talk, he showed some AC Delco commercial "outtakes" where he was constantly cutting up on purpose (couldn't find a copy on EweTube). The dining hall had six large-screen monitors (first I'd ever seen) on the walls, so everyone got a great view. What a great evening."Dumplings are just noodles that have already eaten" - Jon Kung

If you haven't read his books they are worth your time. He did things that sound crazy - but he knew just what he could do in an airplane. I can't imagine hitting buzzards on purpose with a wing just because you can. He once hit and uprooted a tree ON PURPOSE (without crashing) to help out a farmer friend. Big cajones on that guy.Coleman, Texas

I know that many folks here kind of laugh at Twitter, but one of the very cool things about Chuck Yeager is that about ten years ago, at the ripe age of 87, he set up his own Twitter account. And the really cool thing is - he started answering questions from anyone and everyone who asked. And yeah, the guy had a wicked sense of humor. Here's an example (see his reply):
"I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike
"The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand." - Deep Throat -
a brass pair indeed.
The first to break the speed of sound barrier. To do the first of anything, especially aviation related, has to be terrifying.
You can still see the Bell X1 at the National Air and Space museum in DC. (Literally hanging next to Charles Lindbergh’s plane!) You look at that jet, and you think about the type of fortitude it required to reach new horizons. HIGHLY recommend it if you’re at the Washington mall.

Humble man, confident in abilities, some say he was passed over by Nasa due to the lack of a college education. Some say he declined because the initial design prohibited anyone from piloting the capsule.
He was also one of the best, if not the best combat pilot America has ever had.
Aerospace engineering owes more to this man than any other human for his bravery and dedication.
Before Chuck Yeager, breaking the sound barrier had been proven on paper, but thought impossible, from any propulsion system taking in air for energy.
He showed the world, a human and Beemans, was able to pilot a craft to break mach1.

Aerodynamic drag increases asymtotically (sp?) as velocity approaches Mach 1, that's what the big fear was and no one knew that it suddenly took a dive and drag began to reduce:SaltySam said:The first to break the speed of sound barrier. @Botch I've seen some catastrophic rapid disassembly of several amateur rockets where folks don't understand this. Transonic aerodynamic pressure will rip the fins off of rockets that people believed were "bullet prrof". Also, altimeters need to be able to handle that sudden drop in pressure - not to interpret it as a loss of altitude. Deploying a parchute at mach 1 will ruin your day. Fun stuff when it's not your rocket, lol.

Super cool guy. I had the honor of meeting him at an NRA annual meeting years ago. Despite his being an awesome aviator, he was a 'down to earth' regular guy. RIPXL BGE in San Jose, CA. Also a Pit Barrel Cooker, a Cal Flame P4 gasser, and lots of toys including the first ever Flame Boss 300 in the wild. And a new Flame Boss 500.
