Spa requires chlorine pucks ... add about 5 every 2 weeks. That's maybe $2 worth ... at most. So in total I probably go $50 a year (actually I don't really, I have to replace a $40 bucket of pucks every 16 months or so). When the water gets wonky, I just drain it and replace it ... much cheaper than trying to chase the chemistry with hundreds of dollars worth of chemicals.
The only cost I'd say is legitimate is power/gas to heat ... but hey, doing anything other than breathing costs money these days.Napoleon Prestige Pro 665, XL BGE, Lots of time for BBQ! -

I'd say look into the features a bit more, for instance:
- how many pumps (you'll need 2 minimum, trust me ... possibly even a third recirc pump)
- what's the filtration area (bigger is better ... all that water flow needs to go through the filters).
-what is the seating like ... (my recommendation is ditch the lounger ... I have one, and it's a waste of what could be an additional two seats).
- how many jets, are they adjustable?
- I'm not a fan of sound systems .... they break, especially in winter. Use a portable water proof speaker ... does the job fine.
- what is the warranty like?
As for size get it at least 150% larger than you think you will need, especially with kids, or you will be topping it off often. A 'six person' is really only good for four.
If you haven't looked at Bullfrog Spas yet, be sure to check them out.
Last advice, if you and your kids wear clothes in the tub make them tub only and keep them out of the wash. Tubs hate detergent and the foam that follows it.

You can EASILY get hamstring, calf and foot massage off a bench seat ... no need for the lounger. The lounger normally only covers probably 30% to 40% of your full body ... back is on the seat ... which you get with a bench anyhow. Then they do your hams and your calves with two or three jets ... everything in between is blank! And here's the issue ... the bench is made ONLY for a certain height of person, by my guess, you'd have to be 6'2" to 6'4" to enjoy it best ... anyone that is short ... all the hams and calve jets are not in the right place.
In the end, it becomes one of those things where the novelty of it wears off REALLY fast. My tub could easily be a large 7 seater with lots of room, but it's a 5 seater because of the lounger. Check out Hot Spring Envoy ... its a great tub, but the lounger is a waste ... trust me on this one, I'd rather have those two extra seats ... the number of times we've had 2 people sitting uncomfortably on the lounger, just to squeeze 6 people in ...

I chose to skip the lounger and gained an additional matching massage chair in my HS Grandee. Soooo glad I did that for the above stated reasons.Xl bge ,LG bge, two 4' crusher cone fire pits. Weber Genisis gasser and

GrateEggspectations said:Had already given this some thought and, were I proceed with a hot tub, would skip the loungers. Too much of an opportunity cost with respect to the additional seating. This being said, I don’t know whether this exists, but it would make sense for a manufacturer to develop reclining seats, for added versatility. Like a La-Z-Boy option within the tub.Xl bge ,LG bge, two 4' crusher cone fire pits. Weber Genisis gasser and

Just my $.02... When I get in I always do a loop around the tub, maxing the jets at each of the primary seating positions. I always finish with the lounger, and it is always the best. My wife is a marathoner- the lounge seat was a must.Maryland, 1 LBGE

Interesting take on the lounger hate. I'm tall so that may explain my love for those I have sat in and why one is on my must have list when I replace my 20 year old spa. I really want the neck jets and to not have to contort my body to have the jet pound my hams and calves into submission.
I guess I'm anti spa social, I could never imagine more than 4 in my spa and it is probably used solo 90% of the time. Most of my friends have spas (ski town) and seem to use them the same way. SWMBO is not a morning soaker.
One last thing to look at is access to pumps, motors and sensors for maintenance. Keep them in mind when you decide on a spa and its placement. When it is 20 degrees outside you will want easy access your sensors when they throw a FLO or FLC code.Firing up my XL Big Green Egg, KJ Jr. or Weber gasser in Salt Lake City -
Any of you have recommendations if the lounge is good for "swinging", if you know what I mean? Asking for a friend. Ok, ok, it's @JohnInCarolina

Did you end up getting at hot tub @GrateEggspectations? Swmbo is on the tub train and it seems like quite the rabbit hole. The thing I gleaned from this thread was go 220v. And lounger is still up for debate.South of Columbus, Ohio.

@alaskanassasin - if you go down the rabbit hole you nailed it with 220V service. Beyond that give the forum search function a look. Spa/hot tub has had many threads. Lounge for the win-late nights a few adult beverages and you can just rest easy. FWIW-
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -
My only experience in a state where 4 months of use is common is the standard experience that an in ground pool is a hole in the yard that you will throw a LOT of money into! Go the hot tub route for sure!

I have had one for about 20 years, use it all the time in the cool and cold weather, not as much in the summer. I had a Jaccuzi first, was lots of trouble, I replaced it with an Arctic Spa and it is fantastic. My wife doesn’t use it, only me and i am not a fan of having other people join in. Any time you have a couple of people in it you will spend a few days getting the chemistry right again. I just bought the small Arctic Spa, it’s perfect for me and i would say it is well worth it for me ! I did find that my bourbon budget had to be increased, something about a dark cold night in the hot tub with a glass of bourbon. Covid fad is over, just sayin'. FWIW, our daughter's family bought their house about 1.5 year before covid, came with both, still no regrets. IIRC they don't use any chemicals or salt.canuckland

I’ve never owned either personally, but my parents have owned both. As a kid, I’d say a pool is way more fun, but they bore me as an adult, never sure what to do in them. My parents on the other hand use their pool quite often during the summer, and never use their hot tub. They also have a short season in Maine. They have hot water solar panels hooked up to their pool, so it can get pretty toasty. I’ve used their hot tub in the past, it was nice when I was younger when I sprained my leg in a motorcycle accident, felt great on the leg. The pool is a lot of work to open, close, and clean, and expensive to run with the pump running often.
