So does the BGE Brazilian. I got impatient waiting for clean smoke. Rockwood has me spoiled.

Last time I bought WG, I went in with two other guys and we bought 30 bags (10 ea). Picked it up at their distribution center in Mass (about 30 miles from my house). Cost was about $14 per 20 lb bag. Hard to beat that!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

  • My local Ace has been out of Rockwood for a while, looked up some other area locations and found some. Picking it up this afternoon, worth a shot.

I keep hearing good things about Rockwood but down here in the Houston area I have never come across it.   If anyone here is from the Houston area and knows if/where it is carried please advise.   Always willing to try new lump.

    Thanks!

  • Everything mentioned here is why I'm not a fan of all these YouTube charcoal tests.  There is so much more to what makes a good charcoal than how long or how hot it burns, or basically almost everything that is quantitative.  Even the worst charcoal will burn long enough and hot enough to do what you want.  None of us bought our eggs primarily to save money on cooking, so price/pound, while important, isn't #1 either.  I've thrown out whole bags of charcoal that were not worth using, and I don't buy those brands anymore.  Hopefully now that the weather is turning for much of the country, the lighter fluid crowd will ease up on their use, and we will have better lump availability soon.

Do you have ACE hardware in your area?  They stock it nationally and you can order for in-store pickup.

As discussed earlier, supply may make wait times longer, that would probably be the easiest way to acquire locally.  Alternatively, order from them directly.

I just plugged 77070 into the "find a dealer" deal on their website:

    https://rockwoodcharcoal.com/where-to-buy-lump-charcoal/

Lots of ACE Hardware stores listed, so you might have to call ahead.

Edit:  ACE in Galena Park supposedly has it according to their website.

Thanks Johnnyp and Langner91...I have an Ace about 10 mins away from me but I have never seen Rockwood there.    See plenty of BGE, B&B, Fogo, Cowboy and KJ but never Rockwood.    Maybe I should inquire with their management.

BTW, for Houston folks, I go to the Ace on Jones as I live in JV.

Thanks again y'all, great forum with great folks here!

The Ace Hardware in The Heights area carried it when 20stone lived there.

Any stores in TX are probably out, but I think there's a truckload headed there in about 3 weeks.

Thanks y'all.   I will try and get by my Ace early next week (3 day golf tourney starting tomorrow) and inquire with their folks if they can get some in.    Heck, for all I know they do carry it and it just moves before all the others as Rockwood seems to be so popular...

I'm not following a couple comments:

"Even the worst charcoal will burn long enough and hot enough to do what you want."

" I've thrown out whole bags of charcoal that were not worth using, and I don't buy those brands anymore. "

What was wrong with the ones you threw out?

Much of this thread is people (myself included) lamenting the fact that we can't for the time being find the lump charcoal we prefer, and settling for something we don't like as much, for various reasons.  I was pointing out that these reasons are not what most charcoal 'tests' measure.
Most charcoal tests I've watched on YouTube, or read on forums, concentrate on how hot the charcoal will burn if left uncontrolled, how long it will burn at a set temperature, what the price/burn time is, or something else that can be numerically measured and tabulated.
What isn't measured by these tests, which people state for actual reasons they like one brand or the other, are how the charcoal behaves; does it impart a bad taste to the food?, does it smoke too much or is otherwise hard to use?  Burn time or high temperature is never why I like or dislike a charcoal, but it is at the top of the numerics for these 'tests'.
I've tried a lot of different brands of charcoal since I started egging, and I've thrown out bags that burn with a bad odor, have so much dust they smolder instead of burning clean, or are not carbonized fully, so they burn either too hot or not at all.  After trying several brands, I've gravitated the last couple of years towards the brand that has been part of our Ace Hardware 'lament'.

Had a really good conversation with the BBQ manager at Ace today.    They are very skinny on their lump, they had no BGE, a few bags of Fogo brown, a decent amount of Fogo Black (Premium?), couple bags of Cowboy and then they had 2 bags of B&B Competition (which I have used before and liked---I don't care for the non-competition B&Bs as previously mentioned).

He said they do carry Rockwood when they can get it.   I told him I've been buying lump from them for 5 years and have never seen it and he made it sound like that's about right, just can't get it.

Overall he said the shortage is real.   It's not for a lack of trees rather getting them to the mill and completing the process.

If you like dealing with Ace you can (assuming they are not out of stock) order it on the website and have it sent to store with no shipping charges. I got 30 bags from my Ace earlier in the summer this way.

all youtube can do is test how it burns,  they cant really test for consumers likes or dislikes on many fronts. some enjoy the taste of certain lumps, some want it burning so clean there is no added bbq flavor. i prefer cowboy lump over much of the so called high quality and its because of the flavor it imparts. why anyone would watch a youtube on burning lump........

That's not really correct......there is not enough slab wood, kilns, EPA permits, workers, bagging lines, etc to sustain the demand.  The supply hasn't been interrupted, it's just that charcoal plants can't flip a switch and double their output.  It take 3-6 months for the wood to season before it goes in a kiln, then it's in a kiln for 5-7 days, and then there's only so much you can bag in a week unless you're running two bagging lines or multiple shifts......which in the middle of the Mark Twain National Forest, there just aren't enough people.  Even if we could scale to meet demand like that tomorrow, in a year from now when things are back to normal, then all that stuff is going to sit idle and not pay for the loans it took to build it all.

A lot of folks don’t understand the capital outlay it takes to “double” capacity. Our bakery is a wholesale manufacturer. It would take millions in capital and another 40 people willing to work to double our output. Not counting building expansion to house it all.

And your risk doubles (probably more like 5X) right along with it.

I try not to watch those, but they show up on my feed for weeks before I finally give in out of curiosity (and my surprise at the number of views they already have) and click on them.
